skirulz Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Hi Guys I have been getting a thermostat error msg on my optimax 115hp and have the long weekend planned for next week. My question is should i get the thermostat replaced before i go or use it and then replace it at another time if there is no adverse effect on the engine? A little background i starting getting the thermostat error after servicing this year. I spoke to the mob who serviced the motor as the motor is still under warranty and they said it could be that something is stuck in the thermostat now allowing it to close and then i should take it out for a run on the river which i did and the issue is still occurring so i am thinking its time to get the thermostat replaced. any advice is appreciated.
Overdraft Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Id try to get it sorted before next weekend. If it's stuck closed or close to it you will eventually over heat your engine. Your engine will log a fault on its computer so everytime you use it it will log another fault. The issue with that is if you try to sell your boat and the prospective buyer requests a computer print out it will show a re occurring fault and if you over heat it that will also show. Good luck with it.
boattart Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 I had thermostat issues a couple of months back on my Verados. Did a google search and came a across a video on replacing them on Optimax which I assumed where mine so. For a $100 part and a 10 minute fix I see no reason not to replace it now. Out to sea is a bad time to have second thoughts.
sydney south Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 I had an Optimax 175 on a Trophy boat. At around 2000 rpm and after a couple of minutes the alarm would go off indication it was over heating. The cause of the problem was that exhaust gases were escaping from the exhaust join from the join in the motor to the leg. These gases were then entering the cooling tube. The cooling water was effectively being aerated. Maybe worth a look..........
skirulz Posted January 19, 2015 Author Posted January 19, 2015 (edited) I have noticed the issue only happens when i flush the motor or when it is at neutral. THe motor is still under warranty so i am a bit hesitant replacing the thermostat just in case if it causes another issue but if i cant find anyone to replace it i will consider doing it myself for the sake of using it this weekend. antonywardle Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 if still under warranty then best bet is back to the dealer
skirulz Posted January 19, 2015 Author Posted January 19, 2015 (edited) My usual dealer up in Windsor cant look at it till next week and said I should be fine using it until then but i did manage to get it booked in at a outboard place in liverpool for wednesday so hopefully get it rectified. njsconst Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 (edited) Sounds like a common problem.... Mercury. Get a Yamaha!? Edited January 19, 2015 by njsconst
skirulz Posted January 21, 2015 Author Posted January 21, 2015 A bit of a update on my thermostat situation: took the boat in and the issue was the thermostat was stuck open causing the engine not to heat up so the mechanic took out the thermostat and grinded it down a bit and the issue is now fixed.
