Well this is the bar, so I thought I ask people when they are normally drinking.

I've recently started to become a bit of a beer snob when I get the chance.

Maybe as I get older, Ive slowed down a bit and start to appreciate some of the better

ales that are out there.

IPA's (India Pale Ales) now feature in my must have list, and one of the best ones is

an American (yes, from the USA) by a company called Sierra Navada. They can be a bit pricy at

$5:50 a stubbie. If you are interested in supporting Aussie beers, then there are a few to chose from.

One is an IPA from a south australian company called McLaren Vale. Its in a red bottle and a great drop.

James Squires seems to have picked its game up and have one IPA called Stowaway (pinkish label),

its ok, but the Hop Thief is the best one they do.It does seem to be seasonal so you might not be be able to find it.

150 lashes isn't anywhere near as good, but is a good backup.

While not an IPA, the Kiwi Steinlager Pure has been pretty good too, as are a lot of the Mccashins beers

I realize that a lot of people just like the standard New, Old, VB, etc and that's fine, particularly if you have a lot of

mates coming over, but maybe have a think about getting a couple of the exotic stubbies next time you

pick up your slab, and you might just find yourself pleasantly surprised, unless you try the the black giraffe.

Its absolutely terrible. Tastes like cold coffee granules!

Watch the alcohol level as some of the IPAs are a bit higher that the standard stubbies, and

can contain more that 1 1/2 standard drinks. Enjoy responsibly etc, etc etc.

Yes, all the rage at the moment.

Apparently the pale ales only take a few weeks to brew so the breweries like the quick turn around.

I first found Pale Ale at a pub/brewery in Annangrove about 4 years ago. I liked it so much when I am passing I get a couple of their "growlers" which hold three litres.

Needs to be really cold I have found otherwise it be very average.

I have heard of the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale ... surprising high alcohol content for an American beer.

Anyway... I'm in your camp when it comes to checking out whats on offer. My favourite present is a pack of 6 mixed beers which I try during a quite pre xmas camping trip.

Cheers

I had my first drink at 12 years old, Barbie Girl just got to number 1 in the UK charts and I was in Highbury Stadium just about to watch my first Arsenal Soccer game. My brother (the responsible adult he is) bought me a pint of Carling. I sang Barbie girl all the way home on the minibus and My dad asked him what he'd done to me... Best day of my childhood!!!

I've never looked back in the way of larger... Carling is by far the best soccer beer you could ever drink, after a match my team would always head to the bar after to celebrate or commiserate our win/loss, Carling was the one and only beer I had. Many went for Stella or Kronenberg but they were just a bit too bitter for me.

Now I find this interesting that FOSTERS in the UK is marketed as Australias number one beer, the only thing Aussies drink, the biggest export out of Australia... yet since I've been here (2 years) I've never seen it once! But it is a beautiful larger. I drank fosters during the early 20's as it was cheap but also a beer where you could have 10 pints and still manage to crawl home and still be able to taste the kebab you had the night before in the morning!

Out here I have a tap king, and the Mrs works as a producer for TV advertisements which mainly include XXXX and Tooheys so I'm lucky enough to get plenty of samples from time to time. Tap kings are amazing and cheap too! Put one up during a BBQ and you get draught beer that's too easy to drink!

Finally depending on the day... Can't beat a Corona on a warm day!

My current beverage of choice is XXXX Gold. It took a bit of getting used to but now it's my general beer of choice and being a mid strength and common there is always one chain or another that have it on special. A trip to a chinese restaurant would never be the same without a Tsingtao though and for a boutique beer I had a mates wedding in Auckland a few years back and discovered the Hawkes Bay Independent Brewery. Far from cheap but a sensational range of beers.

If you can find it, you have to try Beerlao.

The Lao people take their beer seriously.

It's the nations biggest if not only export.

Arguably the worlds best larger.

Goes great with Chilli Mud Crab.

The only bad beer I have had is no beer. After two cold beers of any description they have the the same effect, cooling, comforting and just plain refreshing. :sun:

Have tried quite a few different brews on my trips over to oz :beer5: On our last trip tended to favour Carlton or Seeds Cloudy Apple Cider. Also the wife and I are partial to a few medicinal reds now and again :sun: We used to nip over to the local Liquorland and get a few bottles of Shiraz Cleanskins/Clearskins.

Looking forward to getting back over again this year.

Depends who's fridge is open

A good variety awaits when you coach me in driving the boat on the trailer.

Must do that soon?

Hi Pak,

This week has seen me;

a) Recouperating after a big day on the water with Salty Dog, on Sunday, Chasing those elusive Billed creatures, everyone else was scoring well on the day before..........I seem to keep suffering from that "you should have been here yesterday!"

B) Sorting a few things out at work, investigating changing supply of a couple of product lines etc.

Looking at a flybridge with a mate tomorrow, and borrowing a hookah off a friend to go over the back of mine on the weekend and try and pinpoint a couple of leg ram leaks as to wether its Hoses or rams, will have a roll of ONE Tape (rescue tape but better, because Roadrunner sell it, and its better and cheaper......and its Roadrunner)

I intend to have next week off, though have a feeling that Tues/ Wed may get skewed.......otherwise can do it then. Thurs/Fri Queensland,

On one of our trips we had a few days in Freemantle and we went to the Little Creatures brewery there. Loved the bar inside the brewery itself and tried all the beers on tap. Just loved them

Also liked the beer from the small brewery at Manly but forget the name of it

I've had mixed success with Little creatures.

the little stubbies weren't so good for me, but the 500ml bottles were much better. No idea why this is so.

Found a 660ml Sierra Nevada Southern Hops that I'm going to take on a test run this evening ;-)

We have a good local brewery on the central coast called Six Strings. They have started selling cans

to bottle stores too, plus they do a taste paddle if you go and see them. Best bet is to start with the

lighter ones, as if you go black first, then you won't taste the others.

Little creatures bright ale was a staple for myself and the boss at my old job, and many of their beers are quite good!

Unfortunately I believe they're going out of production due to ownership change?

James squire range has always had something to offer for whichever mood I'm in,

And after a large hiatus I've just done about 6 home brews from cooper's mix and some local mix the lads up the road do up and sell from their new shop.

Honestly if you haven't had a Crack at brewing your own have a go! Did 2 pales, 2 sparkling ales, an amber, a golden lager and 2 black beers and they all turned out absolutely stunning.

Anything brewed by Montieth (from New Zealand) is awesome.......

Everything from their cider all the way to their black beer.......

Their Black Beer would possibly be my favourite beer at the moment, and has been for a long time now. Bug a very acquired taste, not everybody likes it.

Dan Murphys is your friend!! :D

In saying that - its hard to go past a 3 Sheets (Lord Nelson Brewery)

Best pint I've had in Australia, bar none.

Two other beer selections to check out are Young Henry's Brewery in Newtown and Batch Brewing in Marrickville. They're both a bit hipster, but the beers are alright. Batch are a micro brewery and their Big Kahuna's pretty good- it's darker with a bit of a coconut aftertaste, like the beer equivalent of a bounty.

In Scotland my beer of choice was always Deuchar's IPA, which unfortunately I haven't been able to find anywhere over here :(

Remember having a good trip up the Hunter with the family. It coincided with the wifes birthday and we all got well hammered on a variety of ozzie beers/wines :drunk: :drunk: :drunk::28:

After the ladies had retired Paul and I noticed a huntsman on the rafters above our table out on the veranda. Being rather drunk we decided to knock it down on to the table, play with it and take a few pictures !!!

I am really suprised it did not bite us :sun: The evils of drink

Nothing like a nice corona with seafood or after a hot day.

I drink anything that isn't Hahn super dry or pure blonde.

Fnq is an awsome beer.

All the James squire range is quite good.

Little creatures is nice.

I find the caft beer tends to be a bit heavier and bloats me more which isn't a problem when I'm just having one or two after a hard day but when I want drink half a case or you can't beat corona.

Are you running kegs Witha? So time consuming bottling 6 batches. There is a satisfaction with making a great home brew.

Cant go past the coopers 62 pilsner for me.

Plastics but same idea. Yup its a big process we've got the kit to do it but still takes time. We usually Crack open a few of the last batch and make a day of it :)

62 is one I've been looking at will have to give It a go!
