Onajewagain Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Hi all, Looking for a little advice. Went out for a Jew session last night, my first crack in Qld. Had a little success on by catch as the tide came in with a few nice flathead, and at the still mark, which was 9pm, I got an eel. Nothing out of the ordinary for me on a Jew hunt, however things became frustrating from there. After the eel, I had 5 big runs over about 3 hours, (some by catch aswell) the normal Jew trademarks, peel a little, take a bit more, whack it's in and going like a freight train. All 5 let go/didn't get hooked/bugger me how I didn't hook them. Basically got to the end of the first run, and they disappeared! I was using a 7/0 hook, as I've always done, fresh Taylor fillets, just enough weight to get it down, 4000 reel and 4-6kg Rod, etc etc. all my normal routine. The only thing different is its my first proper landbase crack at them. Anyone had a similar issue and found a solution, please send the advice this way, I'm open to all suggestions! I think I've found them, just now need to land one to prove the ground! Cheers Brad Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Dave_ Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 How big are the Tailor fillets? If they're really big ones and there isn't enough hook exposed, the Jew may be swallowing the bait without being hooked and then spitting it out. Also, are you using circles? If not, give them a try. Jew are just real buggers sometimes.....
Onajewagain Posted January 21, 2015 Author Posted January 21, 2015 15cm ish. I feed the hook through the skin side, drag some line through, and feed it back out so the point is out the skin side again, I take a half hitch and tie the top of the fillet so it doesn't bunch and foul the hook. Learnt that lesson very early on. I'll definitely look at the circle hooks, it's worth the try. Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
filthmonger Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Circles take the guess work out, no need to strike just feel the rod load up and slowly lift. Learnt this lesson on kings.
