PRED-ATOR Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Hi Team, Looking to purchase a pair of fishing waders. Use: Fly, rocks and beach. I have been eyeing off the stocking foot waders, im attracted to the fact you can pick what type of shoes to wear i.e. rock boots etc. My concerns: What type of boot can you use on the sand? i dont want them to get bogged with water and sand. I was looking at the zip up neoprene ones. Questions: Any brands to recommend, problems encountered (did they fill up with water etc) Cheers.
Guest no one Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I used to use chest waders on a sandy bottomed river, not the sea... I never had problems but hey were heavy to move in. I also had bolts screwed into them so I never slipped on the rocks! Very comfortable, easy casting... I was happy... but never used for salt water!
slinkymalinky Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I bought a pair of Korkers wading boots. They have an interchangeable sole... I have felt soles for wading rocky rivers, rubber soles for walking and you can get other types. They have soles with cleats, plates and all sorts of other options. As for sand, the best idea would be to get some neoprene gaiters. I have a pair that came with my neoprene chest waders and their great at keeping crap out of my boots. Cheers, Slinky
Crossfire63 Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Having had to rescue a bloke, several years ago, who got knocked off of his feet by the shore break at Nth Entrance Beach while wearing waders and was unable to get himself back up I wouldn't recommend them at all. It took two of us to rescue this guy which we eventually achieved by peeling the waders off him. If we hadn't been there I have no doubt they would have found him rolling around like a dead whale the next morning. Similarly I wouldn't wear a pair rock fishing. Try swimming in them and then look at the consequences of falling in. On the rocks I simply wear rock boots, on the beach a simple pair of divers boots suffices.
NaClH2OK9 Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 (edited) I'm with crossfire. Numerous stories about waders sinking people when the fill with water. Or the air in them stopping you getting your feet down if your knocked over. I don't think the ocean is the place for them. Edited January 23, 2015 by NaClH2OK9
fragmeister Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I have some Snowbee waders but I use them in the rivers. In the surf in winter I used to use a wetsuit... I don't mind getting wet I just don't want to be cold. A wetsuit overcomes the issue of waders filling with water. Cheers Jim
luderick -angler Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) Waders and rock and beach are a no go wear a wetsuit in cold weather if you do go in it adds buoyancy waders don't sink you the air goes to the feet and you turtle an drown as for fly fishing get a good quality pair of breathable with stocking feet and good wading boots designed for hiking Simms and Patagonia are two of the best makes snowbee are okay and river works do some good stuff and in my option felt soles with studs for streams Edited January 24, 2015 by luderick -angler
PRED-ATOR Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Thanks for the advice guys, Definitely put me off waders in the surf. Any feedback on the neoprene waders which come up to your waist? I was looking at 8mm wet suit pants with neoprene rock boots... Cheers
