mitchie18092
By coincidence funnily enough. Went for a squid after work at camp cove where I had picked up a few stonkers earlier in the week. Caught 2 in about half an hour when I saw a familiar boat cruise round the point and set up anchor to try the same. It was a mate of a mate who had taken me out on his boat once previously - gave him a shout and showed him my squid asking if he was keen to have a little night session. Jumped onboard and tried for another half hour or so picking up another 4 squid so plenty of bait for a few hours. Cruised round to his spot at about 8:15 or so and sent out first strips down. No more than 5 minutes of it hitting the water his handline nearly jumped out the boat! After a quick tussle a nice soapie was on board - first I had seen in the flesh! Another 15 minutes or so and he was on again.. Another soapie, slightly bigger than the last on deck. As soon as his next bait hit the water we were on again and he handed the handline to me for a try. Being strictly land based I haven't quite mastered the art and after tussling for a while the line wrapped around my hand - went for a run and ping! Felt like a good fish too... Down but not out finally I see my little stick keel over - completely different fight to anything I've felt, one long searing run and some big shakes and I knew it had to be my first. Up he comes and we got silver!! Another soapie but to say I was stoked was an understatement.... We managed another 3 on board in about an hour or so before we ran out of squid and called it. 2 for myself! Fish ranged from 55-68 - hopefully one to take home next time out!! We were fishing amongst moorings in about 14m east of the bridge. Simple running sinker to a small suicide hook, 10lb braid to 6lb leader. All on small strips or squid heads. Had by catch of an eel, some bream, some snapper and a flattie. Great little sesh. Photos aren't that flash as we didn't have a proper light but you get the picture... Ryder
That's a great session. Pity about the size, but you can't have everything. I have heard of the technique, using a handling and a stick, but never tried it. I'm happy you got your first, and sure there will be more to come. Well done.
