Short Flick - Greenwich Wharf - 14/03/2015

Daughter had a friends party today at Lane cove so I tucked the rods into the car in case I was going to have the chance to have a go while she attended the party. Dropped her and my wife off and took the boys down to Greenwich wharf just to throw some plastics and metals around. The boys were as usual unimpressed by this planned activity, but were initially happy enough to watch the ferries.

First few casts with squidgee bloodworm were just prospecting. Not long in I cast back towards the rocks and got a hit, then a run, then the reel started screaming. Some very fast quick runs - it was only my 2-5kg SP setup with 6lb line so the drag was not done up a lot, but it still had some resistance in it but the line was just peeling off - gotta love that drag noise. Felt either headshakes or possibly a rapid tail beat and it took off under the wharf. Tried to stop it as best I could but it was too late, he had me around a pylon and the line was stuck. I tried letting off some slack but it made no difference, seemed like the line was pinned to an oyster or something. Mucked around trying to get it out but ended up busting it off. Best run I have had on that gear and it had the heart racing. Guessing it for maybe a bonito or small jew but not really sure. At any rate the fight was satisfying. This fight peaked the boys interest and one of them wanted a go after that, but he soon went back to doing his own thing.

Flicked around some more after re-rigging but no hits on the plastics except for maybe a tailor that came up and bumped it near the surface. Tried a small metal as well but no takes on that.

Noticed some blackfish hanging around and after a little searching found some weed on nearby rocks. Thought I had a blackfish rig with me but was not the case, but had a small weighted float rig which I used instead. It was not ideal, the line was a little short and the hook was slightly too big, plus I think the little egg float was not ideal to detect any downs. I did see a fish checking it out, may have been stealing the weed but can't be sure. I was having trouble keeping the weed on the hook - maybe it wasnt big enough pieces or I was just doing it wrong. At any rate nothing eventuated from it and by 3pm it was time to go back and pick up my wife and daughter.

Nothing to show for it but happy for a little bit of action on an otherwise limited outing.
