Hawks Nest Flathead

Hello Raiders.

My report is 5 months due, but I hope still interesting.

All this happened at the end of October 2014 in Hawks Nest.

Nice sunny day before midday. Running out tide.

My friend and I were on Jimmy Beach, targeting flatheads on a very light gear.

Graphite rods 2-4 kg, 2000-2500 spinning reels, 2-4 kg braids.

He was using SP and I was using small metal vibe.

I was lazy to tie the leader so I only tied the lure to the braid. Big mistake!

We were there for half an hour and suddenly I had a very good bite and could feel big fish on the other end of the line.

This is why we love very light graphite rods with braids and metal vibes or SP.

You can feel everything, what is happening under the water!

I was retrieving slowly, having fun and showing off "my professionalism".

This created very good opportunity for the flathead.

Suddenly when the fish was in one foot of water it shook its head and off it went with my most favourite metal vibe.

Bugger! Fun was gone and I was left with empty end of the braid.

Really disappointed with my laziness and "professionalism".

We slowly moved away combing the water from the beach.

After maybe 20-30 minutes we returned back trying again the same spot.

Shortly after that big surprise. My friend caught the same lizard with my treasured vibe still in his mouth. This time fish was hooked on white bait SP.

It was 53 cm long.

Thank you again my friend and thanks for reading guys and ladies!

Bad luck there. If its one thing I have learned since I started taking my fishing seriously is that if I rush or half ass my approach I will pay for it. Doesnt mean I always remember that but the lesson is clear each time :)

Nice report hucho.. Double bonus u caught the fish u lost initially and got your vibe back. I also love those vibe lewers just havnt used them enough to catch fish. Keen to give lewers a better crack but i tend to sick to the old fashioned bait technique.

Nice report. I was up there a couple of weeks ago fishing Jimmys for flathead with SPs. Met a local who gave me some valuable advice on how to fish for flathead there. Ended up with a 48cm and 42cm over two days.
