Jc2230 Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 G'day Raiders, I've recently installed a Lowrance elite 5 DSI sounder in my boat, changing out my old traditional sonar after it packed it in. Whilst impressed with the clarity of some of the images returned, as well as defining bait schools etc, I'm getting a bit lost on it when trying to sound individual fish, ie kings, snapper etc( there are no arches on these things!!). It is to the point now where I am thinking of installing a traditional broad band sonar unit next to the down scan so I can make sense of what is around the boat. Does anyone have any advice/tips on interpreting down scan images? Thanks in advance. JC.
Guest no one Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I use DSI But as an overlay, especially when on close trolling reefs, it shows more structure, if you select the overlay option while on the normal sonar screen you'll get the best of both worlds! Or duel screen it like my image below... Then you get both options!!!
NaClH2OK9 Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I do the same as Ed. I use both. Primary is sonar with DI as additional detail where I see something interesting.
Jc2230 Posted April 29, 2015 Author Posted April 29, 2015 No worries, thanks fellas. The particular unit I have is DSI only, which I purchased from the states around 18 months ago. I've noticed most new units now offer a combination of traditional sonar/DSI/structure scan etc depending on the price. Might just have to bite the bullet and bolt another sonar unit to the boat! Will keep the DSI unit there for correlation as you mentioned above. Cheers. JC
Guest no one Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 DSI only? Ouch!!! Prob best to buy a new one!
Guest no one Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 You can get a DSI and sonar lowrance elite 4x for 175$ brand new! Not expensive but a good sounder!
