GILL'T Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 A friend of mine is visiting from the UK, so we did what any sensible person would and got a slab of beer and went fishing down at my local spot in Balmain. Managed a few small sized snapper and pesky leather jackets 3 in quick succession, they’re pretty greedy but we obliged and responded with squid. We used one for bait and then started catching these small silver looking buggers, I see they are two different types of fish, but as I’m fairly new to the flicking game I haven’t a clue on what they are…. Any help with ID would be great. We carried on till dark and the slab was finished we surprisingly landed this big nasty eel before our last beer, thing grabbed on to the hook and felt like pulling a log through water. Not too keen on another run in with this guy.
Guest Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 The eel is a moray and far right fish is a tailor which has a legal size of 30cms and middle one is a whiting with the purple on its back
HookLine&Thinker Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Moray Eel... Nasty looking things!Great work on the catch - and the slab ;-)
Volitan Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Eel is a short-finned conger, surely. Sea Fishes of Southern Australia describes it as often found in debris under jetties. Cheers Arron
Guest 4myson Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 No better way to spend a day Than having a few beers (well a case) & having a fish ... Well done mate !!!
chilledFisho Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Good fun mate. the silver fish are Sand Whiting (great eating!!!!) the first pic from left to right. the second is a juvenile Tailor. Good fight (when bigger) not that bad eating. i like them but lots of people don't rate them.
Yowie Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 The whiting looks like a Trumpeter Whiting. The jackets are Yellow Finned Leatherjackets.
