quintrex Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Before the leatherjacket plague several years ago I used to have success fishing for flathead in 50-60 m water off Bondi but the leatherjackets put a stop to that. I haven't fished out of Sydney for some time for health reasons but might try again shortly, however are leatherjackets still a major problem?
NaClH2OK9 Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 I usually fish offshore in 50 to 80 M once to twice a month. I find that jackets are either in plague proportions or not at all. Perhaps one in ten sessions is a mess. And a change of location or style is required ( perhaps hit the shallows for flathead) .
Paikea Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 They are very good eating, just rig with wire and you should get heaps of them. Cheers Paikea
davonyx Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Question: why is everyone so anti leather jacket? I catch some thumping sized ones at up to 100m depth I outside Jervis Bay, and filling the esky with them is great. They are excellent on the table, and generally fun to catch. Like paikea states, wire and your set. Why the hate on leather jackets?
NaClH2OK9 Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Yes great eating. But losing a sinker and 20-50m of line cos the pick up on floating debris on main line is no fun. I lose a lot more tackle in 60m than 100m But once go to wire don't get the other reef species. A tasty but unwelcome and costly species in my opinion.
