While on a recent fishing trip to Laurieton NSW I caught and released about 6 long thin fish (ave 60cms long) with very sharp teeth in a long snout. I think I have identified them as "Barred Longtoms".

Has anyone had experience catching these and are they edible?

I caught them on nippers.

I've caught Longtoms in Scarborough, Brisbane any number of times as a kid and my son caught one in the Georges river last year, picture below. Never tried to eat them, believe they are full of bones. Probably similar to a Pike (I.e. not good!).

Have eaten them a couple of times,. around the 45 to 50 cm mark.

Cut off the fillets, removed the bones, then pan fried them. Similar to garfish fillets - prefer the garfish though.

I also was told that a good recipe is to three quarter fill a pot with water and add soup veggies (carrots, celery, onion etc) and a house brick. Bring to the boil and add the longtoms, and simmer for three hours.

Take out the longtoms and throw away, and enjoy the veggies and house brick!!
