cameldownunder Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Yesterday, being out with the boat, I was listening to channel 16 and channel 78, where the incoming calls got directed. I know there is ( or better should be straight protocol ) on channel 16, but what i've heard, made me laugh so hard. Yes, It really should have made me cry. "Sydney Rescue, here xxxxxxxx, need response", "Here is xxxxxxxxxx, need radio check", plus mobile numbers passed on, over the radio. Tempted to spend a day on the water just to write down all the hilarious comments and request I hear on the radio.
NaClH2OK9 Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 It's standard for marine rescue to request your mobile number and a number for a contact when you log on with them.
boattart Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 I have registered my boat with VMR Sydney. I have a SY*** rego number so when I call up they have all my details on file including a photo of the boat so that in the event of a rescue being required they know what they are looking for. They also have boat and shore contacts numbers and only confirm the last 3 digits to ensure they have the right details. They did charge a fee that I think was $100 donation to VMR which I think is money well spent for safety and convenience.

Yeah, the recently released Marine Rescue app lets you do all this for free and is absolutely brilliant, Also lets you log your trip details via the app and if you turn on the function it will take 30min gps snapshots of your position. Cheers, Rich.
boattart Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 (edited) Great to see technology catching up. 3 years ago when I registered I spoke to someone there and exchanged emails and details to his personal Hotmail account at home and was happy to make a $100 donation to them for his time.
