Hi Raiders,

Was browsing the net for fishing gear as usual, and came across a special for some combos. Having just won a $100 gift card from 7/11 I thought I'd get me a new rod, but the sight of a cheap combo was irresistible. I'm keen to target kings after uni exams, as I've never caught anything that has put up a monster fight, but I'm not sure if my 2-4kg stick will handle a kingy. I'm looking for an overall sort of rod and reel that I could maybe eventually take out to sea if I ever get on a boat. So I'm tossing up between:

Shimano Starlo classix 5-10kg 6'6" + Shimano sedona 4000

Shimano Starlo classix 4-8kg 7' + Shimano sedona 4000

Shimano Starlo classix 5-8kg 7'6" + Shimano sedona 400

Shimano Jungle stix (website doesn't show rating) 7' + Shimano symetre 3000

Any help/suggestions/reviews would be awesome! Not really sure about how much the length of the rod/weight rating affects everything. If any experienced fisho could give this noob a lesson on rods, that'll be much appreciated. Would love any suggestions on some plausible first timer land based kingy spots too, but thats optional! I don't want to be barging on people's secret spots.

Thanks for any advice!

Mate have had a couple of the Starlos over the years and currently use a 5-10kg 9.footer version for shore based spinning, for an all rounder I'd go for the 7 foot 4-8, will give you more flexibility whilst still having the grunt.

If you can stretch to a 4000 symetre with that you'd have a pretty gun combo. Symetre is where shimano higher end design concepts enter their range, Sedona are sturdy as but symetre would be worth the extra :)

Thanks witha! I'll see if I can upgrade that to a symetre! The combo should come down to $50 after I apply my gift card, so I'm really excited to get out there for a flick

I run Symetre 2500s on Starlo 7' medium weight Squidgy pro and a Baitcaster OC 4000 on the 7' heavy. Both are lovely combos, particularly the mediums. The bigger one can put plenty of hurt on, and in fact it's main drawback is the shorter butt reducing leverage (e.g. compared to my Ugly Stick Golds). Both are very light and easy to fish with however.

Thanks for the advice guys, went out and picked up the combo, they wouldnt let me upgrade to the symetre as the combo was set :( but after my gift card it came down to $39 for the starlo 7' 4-8kg and the 4000 sedona, so im cheering. Just spooled on the braid and can't wait to get out there :)
