Hey guys,

I'm interested in going crab fishing and lobster/crayfishing when I buy the pots to catch them in. Is there any particular places to catch them in Sydney Harbour. Also are there many crabs in Narrabeen lakes and are they decent quality.

Thanks

Brendan, you are asking for directions to the Holy Grail. Places to catch Lobsters and to a lesser extent Crabs are zealously guarded and I do not think that you will get too many replies.

But, you could do what most of us have done and that is to keep an eye out for Pros checking/setting their pots early mornings. That will give you a clue as to when and where Lobbies may be found.

Good luck, and if you do get too many drop me a PM, happy to collect any spares from you.

Cheers

Paikea

Brendan I don't know anything about Lobsters and when or where to catch them. I do know that the crabs are thinning out at the moment and the season may well be over.

An ideal area for crays will have kelp, irregular bottom , preferably slab rocks with crevices or boulder fields with lots of kelp. They like high energy and washy areas. Pots best left out overnight and check in the morning. If you leave your crays in the pots too long the occys steel them. Beware of wobbies, morays and catfish. They all live in the same places and all can damage pots and hands.

It might sound like I have described the entire sydney coast but that's pretty accurate. Make sure you don't get your boat in any hairy spots dropping or picking up pots keep in mind the swell and tide may be different when you are returning to collect your pot.

we catch quite a few large blue swimmers in the Pittwater area. Took us a few years to work out where they are. Often the damn Octopus' will smash them before we get to the pot.
