NaClH2OK9 Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Hello Raiders. There are a multitude of weather prediction apps and sites that give us insight as to what wind sea swell and conditions may be for planning our trips. BUT what are you using to predict current? I fish from a 5m alloy half cab and monthly from a charter. I'm frequently finding in my own boat that in anything over 50m I'm struggling to hold bottom even with up to 1lb. Sinker and this can be on days with almost no wind. I don't have any of these issues on the charter with the same gear. Steve
dogbox Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Hi mate I us IMOS to predict ocean current and have in the past had the same problem holding the bottom. I found that once I started using braid I found the bottom easier with less lead I take three rods one fitted with 15kg mono and two fitted with braid 6 and 15kg I also found that the type of sinker you use can affect the way your line surfs across the bottom. I have a sinker shaped in a triangle, its absolutely useless in any current, it seams to plan the line upwards off the bottom. dogbox
roadrunnerparts Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 If your not anchoring, you may want to also nose the boat into the current or the wind, and use the motor, slowly or in and out of gear, to hold your position, so you are only fighting the current against the line and sinker

My boat almost always turns it's arse around (my line is always out of the back of the boat) the motor would be a Chalange as even tick over moves me a bit but I'll give it a try.
dogbox Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Just add if your boat is easy affected by wind like mine try a sea anchor i had one sea anchor bought from BCF blue tarp material completely useless, i then bought one made from a type of material like a parachute best one by far dogbox
NaClH2OK9 Posted June 6, 2015 Author Posted June 6, 2015 Hmm. You've just saved me $30 was looking at the blue tarp ones today when you updated. I left it on the shelf.
batfishing Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 If you haven't got one, also get a reef pick, and if you get a reef pick, get aan anchor lift float. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
