G'day fishy folks,

Spent a beautiful morning sight fishing blackfish around the Spit. Spent a frustrating first hour missing fish after fish, these fish were really big blackfish, and I think my problem was I was undergunned in the hook department. Kept getting good downs, varied times etc, still couldn't connect, but these were serious sized fish.

Moved slightly and targeted another couple of loose aggregations and landed quite a few fish from small to really solid fish in the sub kilo range. Pretty interesting fishing with fish taking weed in around a meter of water after inching a stem float back from the deep, or drifting it in to the shallows on the current. All fish were taken on string weed gathered from the rocks.

Nice going,  I find the mustad green hooks are strong and small for this type of fishing.  Love sight fishing for any fish is great.  Should try flying for them.

Yeah, I use the no 6 and 8 green snecks in the estuary, but I think I needed some of the plain no 6 bronze hooks tha I use of the rocks for the bigger fish.

Hey yellow sub,

When you flyfish for blackish in an estuary, how do you keep the bait at the correct depth in the current whilst making it appear natural?

Cheers

you can buy green weed flies and they work very well. I have used them off the rocks in hot bites to save rebaiting and they work real well.

It looks like that new okuma centrepin... moving up in the centrepin stakes mac! :1prop:

Very nice fish there Matt. I use to really enjoy blackfishing, havnt targetted them for ages. although Iv'e caught a few using breadfly when down the lake while going for bram and mullet. They are great fun on fly and pull like anything, much stronger than bream. Iv'e used weedflies b4 as well, they work very well, again, burley up with bread and your chances improve. As for table fish  , cleaned and wrapped in foil with lemon or garlic and bbq is not bad.

G'day guys,

Yeah CAMS Bashir is right that is an Okuma Aventa, I purchased it through ebay, great reel, perfect size. They are used for stellhead in Canada and US, but are considered the low end of steelhead pins. A perfect reel for blackfish and a delight to cast.

My question on fly fishing is, do you use some sort of indicator to detect a bite, because obviously you aren't luring them by stripping ?? BTW I know FA about fly fishing all though I do have a rod and reel gathering dust at home.

A nice luderick macman. I havent had the time to chase them which is a shame i love catching them. I use the mustads all the time off the rocks and have never let me down. Witnessed some monster blackfish on fly caught by a cpl of the old boys up here on the Central Coast. Ill have to give it a go one day. Theres a guy who fishes for them at avoca and he belreys with bread which floats then the blackfish smash it on the surface and he just throws out his bread fly and strips it across the surface.
