Big Bob Posted September 26, 2005 Share Posted September 26, 2005 All, Just got back fr Tassie and had the opportunity to got fishing for Trout with a spin outfit I took and low and behold my first Atlantic Salmon 60 cm mouth to fork and 2kg clean. I asked a bloke in a boat shop recently if the tassie salmon was atlantic, and he said no, its a tassie variety. But i had suspected that it was farmed - is that correct? Big Bob Posted September 27, 2005 Author Share Posted September 27, 2005 Not sure if it was farmed but I caught it on the Huon River and I believe there is some sort of release program there. Salmon take longer to mature than Trout and as a result are not the preferred farmed species. Cooked this on a BBQ with lemon and onion and spice stuffing wrapped in foil. 15 mins a side and it tasted great a lot like trout in tecture. Had 2 browns follow my lure right to my feet that I estimated at about 4 kg but they werent interested enough to have a go. Trout in Tassie stick close to the shore and dont congregate in the middle as they do in NSW due to the temperature being freeking freezing continually. Ideal for Lure fishing all in season. granpop Posted September 27, 2005 Share Posted September 27, 2005 Hey BOb There is a release program in the Huon river, but it is accidental The salmon pens for growing them have accidents (seals like salmon too) and the results end up in the Huon No matter, they taste good and fight well.
