ambrose607
Hi Raiders While reading reports i have noticed references to baits such as fresh sqid and fresh cuttlefish it got me thinking last week while looking at a pizza menu a seafood pizza had cuttlefish and sqid on it. I always thought they were the same thing. Is there a difference between the two?
brad_tate
Different species, but both from the class Cephalopoda (I.e. Cephalopods). Both Molluscs, not fish. Cuttlefish have a thick internal shell of quite unique construction whereas Squid have a thin clear internal shell to provide stiffness (looks like a piece of clear plastic). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squid https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuttlefish Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Edited July 9, 2015 by Tastee

ambrose607
Thanks Tastee. The difference is very noticeable with those pictures. Is calamari different again? Or one of those
Crossfire63
Calamari is an Italian dish of cooked squid
NaClH2OK9
Calamari is a type of squid not a cooking method. Calamari have wings that run the length of the hood. Other types of squid have shorter wings. This has been discussed lots of times on this site. Do a search.

Conor_B
Calamari is Italian for squid, and often all types of squid are referred to as calamari when served as food. However calamari is also a type of squid, with southern and northern species. Also known as southern reef squid and big fin reef squid

Time28
For me calamari (green eye)have wings down the length of the body. Arrow squid have short wings at the top of their body. If people tell they caught squid I ask what the length of the body wings are This clarifies for me which type they caught. Easy. And calamari(full length body wings are better to eat)
The Incredible Hull
What everyone said above is correct, pedantic because we're fishos but nonetheless correct. Having said that, if you mention arrow squid to a non-australian they'll have no idea what you're talking about. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squid_(food) In most countries around the world, its just commonly called Calamari. As for eating, the thicker the hood the more tasty! So that's easy, arrow squid have thin hoods, not even worth eating. Zip bag it and freeze for bait. Calamari have much thicker hoods and Cuttles have even thicker hoods. Molto bene!
finin
Camo, I think cuttlefish is better. The bigger the cuttle the better.
