W4z
Hey fellas, A few weeks ago I was up north and got a bit of fishing in. First off was in Evans river at Evans head. My uncle took me out on his tinny looking for bream. It was a slow and wet day but in the end I managed to out fish my uncle with a bream and a flattie. I fished off a few beaches with my 12 ft rod that I haven't used much and wasn't having any success. I need a lot more practice I think with casting it. I ended up camping in the national park just south of yamba. Beautiful place. When sussing out the beaches on morning I spotted a gutter in close. Went back in the afternoon with my 7ft rod as that's what I know best and had a go. First cast and I was onto a bream. Second cast I hooked up to something but dropped it. Third cast a wobbegong, a first for me. Next cast another bream Then for the next 45 mins until sunset it was wobbegong after wobbegong. It was a good fun session but I did get sick of catching wobbies. It's a great place of the world and I'm happy to have caught some fish off the beach. All fish caught on fresh mullet Cheers Waz Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

W4z
Thanks mate, the first one was 36 and the second 31cm. It's amazing how hard they hit in the surf too. I'd heard they hit hard but was still surprised.
Guest hawkesbass
Not bad at all. once you get in a rythum casting your 12ft rod on the beach gets easier and it will become second nature.

Ryder
You have to love the far north coast. Long deserted beaches, and loads of fish if you know where to look. Bream, dart and whiting are always on the cards and you don't need to cast a mile to find them. On the light gear, its one of my favourite forms of fishing. Congratulations on your first, I'm sure there are more to come. Like Trevor said, once you get a rhythm 12 ft is easy. Don't start trying to cast to the horizon. Feel the weight, let the rod load up, and lob it out.
W4z
Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah more time casting the rod would be good but I just don't feel the urge to fish Sydney beaches.... Looking forward to get another chance to fish some beaches out of Sydney. Not sure when that will happen now that I've got a little one on the way in about month... GreyNurse
Nice report and well done mate. Stay with the 12ft rod off the beach. It's just a matter of practice, practice, practice, and you'll soon find the length and the weight of the rod becomes second nature. I couldn't fish the beaches with anything less than 10', that's for sure. Match the rod up with a 5 or 6" Alvey, or a Seamartin reel and you're set. Most good fish are in the close gutters and channel edges, so don't be worried about distance casting at the moment. It will come. I still get out cast a mile by other fishos on the beach, but manage enough hook ups to keep me happy. Leave a few fish for me up on the Mid North Coast beaches so when I retire there, I'll have more to do than playing bingo!
