Mike89
Hi guys - hoping to get some advice here on how to remove rust from the screws on my Penn Assault 6500. Found this reel on the end of the wharf one day and it has performed excellently however I noticed today that most of the screws are quite rusted. I've run over with a toothbrush and Mr. Sheen however I am concerned that the rust is deeper or could still spread. Could anyone offer a suggestion for how to remove the rust completely from these screws? Or should I get new screws (from Penn..?) ? The perfectionist bent inside me wants the rust gone, today! New to fishing so general pointers on reel maintenance would also be appreciated! Thanks guys!
cameldownunder
Rust remover? Leave in it for 1 hour and then wash off with water and dry.
Mike89
Didn't know there was such a stuff. I'm using a bi-carb mix at the moment, will see if I can find some of that stuff if it doesn't work for the screws. How is the coil supposed to sit? I opened up the handle and the spring just jumped out at me. Thanks in advance. Cheers!
brad_tate
Try soaking in neat CLR. I used to do that for an old SS vanity basin waste that kept rusting up. It cleaned it up very effectively back to a reasonably bright finish but the rust did come back afterwards a couple of months later. For your screws once you have cleaned them up once perhaps a coat of something else would help stop the rust reappearing - fish oil to stop external rust reforming, or rust remover to further stabilise the SS. What do others think? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Mike89
Thanks for the input! I'll try that. Had some success with the bi-carb but yes it looks like the rust is returning already. Have a question about the line-roller washer. There is a metal washer and a second thin plastic washer over the top. The plastic washer has disappeared! Does anybody think this is needed? Thanks for help.
brad_tate
I am not an expert here so won't answer. Try a few searches on the site for washers as I have read a lot of interesting posts from the game fishermen that are relevant. This is worth reading: http://www.leeroysramblings.com/fishing_reel_maintenance.htm Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Edited July 13, 2015 by Tastee

qnut
That's the Kmart Penn - they're designed to fall to bits. This man speaks truth.. Whilst they DO have the REAL DEAL HT-100 Carbon Drag... The rest is horrible.. It follows the same design as the battle series apon dismantling but the materials used are sub-par. Mine began to corrode on the crown gear - Then bail arm roller - THEN external screws & to finish it off... The Reverse bearing 'rollers' began to deteriorate and become pitted causing them to eat into their plastic housings & retern springs. The reel was NEVER dunked. Although I did salvage that drag system and its preety damn good retrofitted into a sienna 2500FD Edited July 15, 2015 by Qnut
