Telling A Fish's Age?

I believe in some species you can tell from the scales. The most common scientific method I believe is growth circles on the otoliths ( a bone like structure in the inner ear.)

Which obviously requires directing the fish and a good microscope.

A better method is to know the fishes growth rate and guess by length. This will obviously change with species.
