bam bam Posted August 7, 2015 Share Posted August 7, 2015 Hi all, if I was looking at a 3.85m tinny with specs indicating main motor weight was 105kg and max HP was 30. Croydon Posted August 8, 2015 Share Posted August 8, 2015 Hi Simon, To stay within the regulations and to be covered by insurance both the HP and weight of motor have to be within the manufacturers set limits as displayed on the compliance plate. It is possible to put a slightly higher HP that is within the weight limit but you would have to contact the manufacturer tell them what your doing and get a new compliance plate to cover the changes. stevefish Posted August 8, 2015 Share Posted August 8, 2015 The transom is engineered to a strength, that strength is higher than the max power that the rated outboard can give. Push the HP over the rating and when you bury the nose in a wave you have higher pressures on the transom and the rest of the structure of the boat. Over time this would break down the boat.
