Fishin-niac
Anyone know if port Jackson sharks are a protected species and are the edible ?? Hooked on and pulled out 2 of them near "the wedding cake" but chucked them back in just in case .. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

nbdshroom
They are not protected, and apparently they are not good table fare.
sam bros
they were removed from the protected list but don't think anyone eats them
Guest no one
People eat them. It's just you get a tiny bit of meat for the size of the fish! There is so much waste it's not worth it! Definitely a release fish!
fisholb
Definitely a throw back If you keep catching them better off moving somewhere else coz you wont catch anything else Sent from my GT-I9305T using Tapatalk
Mike89
So they are not protected? A guy at the wharf I often fish off hauled one of these monsters in late one night a few weeks back. I jumped over to help with my net and just about broke the thing. It would have been 5 or 6 feet long, maybe more. A real sea monster, thrashing around with its brutish ugly head shaking from side to side. No chance of lifting it, I reckon we should have tried to bring it in to the lower section of the jetty to get a better look but they just wanted to cut the line. They didn't even take a picture! I guess I was more impressed than they were. Biggest thing I've seen caught, very heavy and solidly built creature. I guess that's why there's not much meat on them. GreyNurse
Can grow to be big buggers all right. When I started fishing t-years ago I had a bamboo rod......until I hooked a 1meter + Port Jackson. We kept it and ate it for dinner that night, but there was not a lot to go around for it's size.(I think back then they may have been protected, not sure about the mid 70's) I've since thrown back subsequent catches or cut the line, as they tend to get gut hooked. A much better fish to observe diving then to catch IMO.
