winter landbased salmon + kingfish

Headed out at 6 in the morning for a few hours relaxation so grabbed a block of pillys and away I went.

Arrived on location and burleyed up and on my first cast I hooked something decent but the line was frayed from a previous trip and it snapped as soon as the fish took off. :ranting2:

Re rigged and went back at it. Whilst re rigging my other rod buckled and after a short fight up came a small salmon going 48cm. In the next half hour I caught another two salmon roughly the same size all of which went back into the drink.

It died off for a couple hours after the peak high at 8 am and it wasn't until 1030 that I got my next hookup which took me by surprise. :o

A cormorant happened to swim over my line at the exact time my rod buckled, I thought nothing of it and was about to turn away when the cormorant got startled by the line and flew away and my rod was screaming. I quickly ran over and the fight began, I immediately knew this wasn't one of those small salmon, this thing was taking a lot of line and lunging down deep so I gave it as much stick as possible and managed to turn it. A few tense minutes later I netted a 61cm kingfish

I'm with you Krispy,

Can't wait til summer but still a pretty good result. Nice to see the rats are still around through winter.

The populations are certainly building up.

cheers

Jim
