Hi guys,

Just wanted gauge opinion on transom savers. Are they a necessity? My owners manual says that I should have one fitted when trailering but have been getting by with it fully trimmed up and locked in.

My trailer doesn't fit the y fork style and a search online came up with an American compression cylinder type thing. Not sure if I'm allowed to use brand names here so didn't include the name.

Anyway would be interested to see what you guys think.

Cheers

I think it's dependant on a few things whether you "need" one or not.Transom strength, engine weight being the major factors.

You have to keep in mind that when trailering with the leg in the raised position that leg is acting as a fulcrum on the transom every time you hit a bump/depression in the road causing alot of flex in the transom. You don't mention what boat/outboard you have but a simple block of wood wedged inbetween the outboard and transom or a roller with a split cut down the middle on the trim/tilt rams will usually suffice and is better than relying on the engine lock. That lock is supposed to be used only while working on the engine or to keep the leg raised when the boat is stationary as far as I know.

I would do something to take the weigh of the engine of the transom no matter what engine I had to prevent possible transom issues down the road.I have a light gauge tinny with a 30hp and use one.

Those transom saver brackets can either be bolted to the trailer or welded on,are you sure that it will not fit your trailer?

I guess another question people debate is whether to store outboards with the leg raised or lowered?Again it depends.

Cheers.

A piece of 8 x 2 pine, untreated works fine for adding a little cushioning...

Cheap and lasts for years.

Works fine for my 75Merc on a Quintrex 475..
