Beach Fishing Session

Hi Raiders,

So I headed out yesterday afternoon. Absolutely beautiful weather, light westerly and sun was out.

In the armoury I had a 12 foot rod, running 20lbs mono on a 6000 reel (with about 15kgs of drag). I had 250 metres of mid quality mono as top shot to about 400 metres of cheap mono. The bait was servo pillies. I used a 1.5 metre fluro trace (20lbs) and a size 3 star sinker attached to an ezy rig (above a swivel).

I used my burley bag invention which I must say I'm quiet proud of. It's a 5kg weight (like a gym weight) with a fish keeper bag attached. In it I had the aniseed chook pellets and a couple of old fish frames I ripped out of the freezer. It's brilliant because the waves thrash about the bag but the 5kg weight anchors into the sand. It's a bloody heavy weight which I stash nearby in the sand dunes so I don;t have to haul it every session (lets see how long I get until someone pinches it).

About 10 minutes after setting my bait a local old hand called John and his mate Kevin arrived on the scene. John's retired and we got chatting, an absolute wealth of knowledge. I asked him if he used fishraider and he said no (he doesn't own a mobile phone or computer yet). Whilst we were talking a bait ball arrived on the scene. It was about 50 metres from the shore and approaching my bait. I looked into my tackle box and I forgot my lures! Bugger. Anyway, soon enough I was hooked up and reeling in a fish. He wasn;t jumping, but as I got him to shore we quickly identified him as a big sambo (75 cm's to be exact). Nice!

I decided to keep the sambo to both eat and use as bait. I filletted it and chucked a slab onto a size 8/0 gamakatsu circle hook. as the light began to fade my reel starts to spool. In comes a 1 metre shovel nosed shark. Sweet!.

About 20 minutes later my reel started to spool. I tightened up the drag but my bait got spat out whole. Who knows what it was, but maybe I tried to set the hook to early.

As the session drew to a close the light was gone. I fired up my new portable light which was absolutely brilliant. It's battery charged and cost me about $40. It's like a lantern and you easily get 6 hours of strong light. Anyway reel started spolling hard. This time I waited about 30 seconds before setting the hook and he was definitely on. I battled the beast for a good 20 minutes walking about 200 metres up the beach. With the drag tightened right up (close to 8kg I calculated) he managed to rip of about 550 metres of line! It was obvious to me by the way he was fighting this was a bloody big shark or Ray. I tightened up the drag and busted myself off. Thankfully I got all my line back (snapped near the hook).

There's plenty of nice bronzes getting around at the moment we had two live tailor taken at Wamberal the other week. Perfect arvo yesterday with that high tide right as the sun was setting good session.

I went Friday amd Saturday Terrigal last week (beach and rocks). Real slow. Even that travelling band of oriental fisherman didn't catch much (except for tiny flathead).

I had some success on pigs a couple of weeks ago down at Winney was good fun, might be worth a crack tomorrow after this south swell eases up a bit. Haha have to love the orientals

Ledge, coal seam or rat trap?

I used to have the key for the gate - rangers change them every couple of years.....

Enjoy your session tomorrow and over the weekend. I'm working/fathering/attending a wedding all weekend

If you know splashy rock when you first walk in there's a rock shelf to the left of it with a nice big drop off next to it gun spot for blackfish and pigs when there is a bit of wash around. Yeah I'm in the same boat might get an early session in tomorrow morning hopefully get some salmon/tailor for bait
