allen_f Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Hi raiders, So my dad has returned from overseas and he wants to take a quick holiday down to Jervis bay. I'm not really familiar with the area and I have been reading up on some old reports of massive kings and even marlin being caught landbased. I'm not after the big fish, as I don't have the gear to handle it :'( If anyone has any suggestions for where to catch some bread and butter species or even some salmon/kings landbased. I would be really grateful Thanks!!
Mike89 Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 (edited) I went down there about 6 weeks ago after a fat spell of rain - the fishing was pretty miserable as such until the last day where we were finally able to catch a few off Huskisson Wharf but I did do a good deal of scoping the area and talking to some locals about good spots to fish. Here are a few spots I can remember - Moona Moona Creek - supposed to be good for mullet and flathead. The creek is pretty shallow at the entrance to the beach (Sailors Beach I think it was) but a lad who fishes the area often told me it is a pretty reliable spot. Unfortunately the water was the colour of coffee when we were there, so no luck for me that time. There's a great B&B as well as camping grounds at the creek mouth. Sailors Beach - supposed to be good for flathead and bream. I saw a few people fishing off the flat rocks at low tide. These will be inundated at high tide so you'd have to pick your time. Woollamia Wharf - you can hire a boat to go up Currambene Creek here. Not too sure what is available here but it seems a good spot. The whole creek must be good fishing in the right conditions, but again with the rain and being in the middle of winter we had no luck! Huskisson Wharf - at the mouth of Currambene Creek where it meets the bay. This is where we got a few tailor and bream on the last day. The lady hooked onto a nice flathead (it seems) but it shook the hook before we could land it. Good spot I reckon but might get a bit crowded. A dolphin frolicking about came right up to the two of us and just about winked at us here hours before we got in the car to head back to Sydney - really made the nearly fishless fishing trip worthwhile. Hyams Beach - a nice long beach a bit further down. Seemed pretty good but new to beach fishing I didn't have any luck. Murrays Beach - heard it was a good spot but didn't try. A lady from the second place we stayed told us that her brother-in-law fishes in the national park at a top secret location. We had a look around and Cave Beach seemed like a good bet. The beaches here break out onto the open ocean, so here you'd get the salmon, tailor etc. The Tubes is the landbased game spot that you've heard people catching marlin from. It seems pretty hardcore and potentially dangerous and definitely beyond my scope of experience, but I'm pretty keen to try it at some point when I've earnt my rockfishing stripes. Great place to go! I'll be heading back for a few days some time before November. It was too bad about the weather and conditions there when we went but I'm sure there is plenty of action to be had. Maybe consider a charter too to take the two of you out to catch some of the bigger fish out in the bay. Not sure on prices and haven't been myself but I've heard they catch some good stuff out there. I might do this on my next trip. I'm sure others here can give you some better tips that me as I've only been the once. Good luck! Edited September 12, 2015 by Mike89
port hacking addiction Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Hey mate if u go to murrays beach car park and walk the tracks takes u to a few rock cliffs they can be dangerous on the wrong days but u can catch kings, bonito, salmon pritty much anything. They are also half an hour plus walks. Callala bay has rocks beside the beach can be good fishing there for bread and butter and lot safer too
John'O' Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Those cliffs are very dangerous snd many lives have been lost especially at devils elbow. If your land based try caves beach off the rocks or a much safer spot like hole in the wall or plsntstion point at vincentia
mii11x Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 just make sure you visit a tackle store down there mate and grab yourself a map of areas that are restricted
