gundi4 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Hi all, Not too long ago I put a similar post about zero squid and no takers, but now after a fair bit of research and questions answered on the forum, today I came up with two nice calamari and a couple of cuttle fish I believe! I know to most fishos catching bait is a given but to me I was absolutely buzzing that I was actually getting results from all the practice. With my live bait tank full (not really but for me it was chockers) I went straight to one of the harbour markers to drift out a live squid. Long story short I proceeded to do this at the wedding cakes and a fair few channel markers for nothing. First question: Do I need to run a lighter leader and/or lose the sinker? I was fishing 30lb braid with a running ball sinker to swivel and 60lb fluorocarbon. Second: Do cuttle fish make good kingy bait? And third: For harbour kings is September a slower month? Piss'n'Broke Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 God no mate, September is when they are all waking up from a cold winter, there are plenty of rats about but not many keepers. Try some new markers perhaps upriver or if you have a downrigger use it til you locate where the kings are holding. I love using cuttlefish as a live bait, I much prefer them over squid but that might just be me.... Keep in mind cuttlefish are nasty lil buggers they can and will try to bite you. Dan
gundi4 Posted September 20, 2015 Author Posted September 20, 2015 Thanks for the reply. A downrigger is next on the list actually. And yes the cuttle fish was doing its best to have a go at my fingers! Slippery suckers! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
NaClH2OK9 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Hi gundi. It sounds like you're doing everything right except locating the fish. I certainly wouldn't downgrade the kit. Keep at it and I'm sure the kings are just around the corner.
