allen_f Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Finally the sun has come out to play and conditions looked perfect. Just in time for my uni break. Went out with three other mates to como and hired a tinnie. We got out onto the water at around 9 and sped through to captain cooks bridge whilst dropping some bait along the way. First stop... we picked up a little whiting about 15cm, it was good to see some whiting about. Got to captain cooks at around 1030 and dropped a few baits and whipped a few soft plastics for a big fat 0. Moved back to closer to tom uglys for a few casts among the rocks and got smashed by something twice resulting in bit off hooks, my guess was it was a fat tailor. Last cast there and I brought in a nice flattie going 40cm. Chucked that in the slurry and meanwhile my mates brought in small snapper and some small bream, about 1 of each. Moving on to the boats moored near tom uglys and we pick up a small bream... it got dead quiet and our will was withering. Time to move spots, we anchored up next to tom uglys near the marina and this is where tragedy happened. As one of my friends bent over to pick up some bait, the tinnie rocked and one of my rods went overboard straight to poseidon's backyard :'( Lucky it wasn't an expensive combo. From there with morale's destroyed we moved on back to como bridge and anchored up at the mouth of woronora. There were already 2 boats there so we tried out luck. Berleyed up and within 2 minutes I had something smash my line. At first I thought it was a jew but it turned out to be a nice fat trevally, after a short fight we scooped it up into the boat going 37cm. Other boats looked on in shock as to how fast we were getting the fish on. Next cast and I had been smashed but missed the hook up. My mates all got fired up now and out went pilly cubes left right and centre. Next up, my mate hooked onto a bream going just legal for 26cm (his first fish caught in Aus!! Hooray to him). As he loves bream, I told him to keep it for some chow but usually I wouldn't keep any that size. So with morales raised and the fish firing, my next cast managed another travelly, this time a tad smaller going 33cm, but still fighting like a freight train. Not wanting to be beat by the fishes my friend had another cast and hooked up to something big... This time it had his little $40 combo going nuts, his drag was buzzing and line was getting taken out. 10 minutes later, I managed to get the fish into the net almost capsizing us in the process, but whatever got the fish Turned out to be the biggest trev of the session going 38cm! He was cheering After those catches, we had a few more nibbles then it just went quiet. We went closer to the shore as it was low tide and had a bit of a drift. I hooked up to a little 20cm bream on prawn and with 30 minutes left of hire time decided to give the pillies another go. I let the bait sit on the sand for a bit and then decided to reel in when I felt an extremely heavy weight. At first I thought I was snagged on a branch but as I was reeling this thing started to take out line like crazy! My reel was buzzing and I finally got it close to the boat to see some colour. I was hoping for that 60cm flathead but it turned out to be a stingray... It was the size of my net, probably going 50cm in diameter. It made a bee line straight under the boat so I hoped it didn't snap my road, in an attempt to cut the line the stingray luckily pulled the hook. Phew.. cheering. A few more casts and we went back in. Overall, finally a good day to relax with some great weather and even better company. Not to mention a few fish which was quite nice. Well that's dinner sorted, some travelly sashimi, pan fried trevally fillets and some beer battered flattie and chips
amkr Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Ripper! I've had good luck on the moorings around the corner from where you pick up the boat.I've had a crack under the bridge and along the sandy shallows as well as amongst the mangroves with bugger all luck. Awesome to see you get some Trevally around there!
Guest no one Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Nice, You lost your rod in my back garden (kinda literally as I'm on the river front at Tom ugly marina) never done any good when casting land based around my house, only stingrays - see people fishing the boat ramp all the time but never once seen a fish come up from tom ugly bridge or the ramp!
dav Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Awesome report mate, sounded like a great day out besides losing one of your rods.
