nosquid Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) Headed out with my father to a place that is frequently visited. The weather yesterday was pretty warm and the water was slightly coloured so the expectations were pretty high. On Arrival we saw that the place was already occupied by another fisherman fishing with 4 rods. Anyway we set up on the far right of him just to secure a spot as we had arranged to meet up with Ryder. We greeted the fisherman who seemed friendly at first but on seeing what we were going to target, his attitude changed. He had also been targeting luderick but had left a mess with weed all over the place and he then decided to try and scrounge up all the offcuts of weed that he left lying around and kick it into the drink. I quickly picked some up and had enough for two tries. On the first drift that I had my dad set up on, we had a very tentitive down ….then up and then down and up and then down…….. being my dad’s only second outing and 2nd down for luderick fishing, this fish seemed to just run out and then slack…. Surgeon. The line was cleanly bitten off just by the hook. This had my dad and me very excited and just as that happened, Ryder was fortunate enough to witness the short fight. Anyway with Ryder there and also setting up and with a fresh supply of weed we were set. I managed to set the hooks on the first luderick of the session and it came in at only 29cm. Then Ryder got his first down, however the line parted at the reel and the float just continued to go down . The float stopped about a foot off the surface then suddenly went down deeper. My dad managed to hook the stray line and Ryder quickly began to pull in the line but he fish was gone. At least we managed to retrieve the float…. Ryder quickly reset his rig and then quickly got into more downs, and then netting his first fish which was roughly in the high 30s. His next fish he dropped and then he got another at an impressive 47cm and very broad on the shoulders. Well as we experiment more my dad finally hooked up and this fight again went hard. It dived and dived for structure and then Ryder called it… Surgeon. With Ryder’s very good netting skills he quickly netted the fish in one quick motion and the fish was in the net. Man how lucky was that, as I have still not been able to catch a surgeon fish yet and my dad gets one on his second outing. The Surgeon measured 37cm. Anyway dad proceeded to catch another luderick on his next drift and miss a lot of other downs. I managed to also land a nice luderick so 4 fish for the day was great between my dad and I. As for Ryder he was the only one who was still managing to get occasional downs and hookups. His tally for the morning was 5 luderick and the biggest fish of the day. We left just before 12pm and it was a great day. Thanks for the invitation Ryder and also for providing the bait. I hope to join you out again.
