will_l Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has any knowledge in trying to get a job at a tackle store? I'm currently in Year 12 and I've been wanting to try and get some work (to try and keep busy as well as earn a bit of coin to try and buy some more fishing gear ). I'd like to work at something related to fishing as I think that if I really am passionate about it I will enjoy it more, compared to trying to enjoy flipping some burgers. If anyone has any tips on how to approach a store and ask about getting a casual position, or if you know a store looking for some people, let me know. I would be very appreciative. Thanks a lot, Will
rockfisherman Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 The tackle stores I frequent managed and run by the owners, who know their clients and have built a relationship with them. And in that time I don't think iv seen anyone other than the owners apart from rare occasions. I would point you in the direction of the big stores that sell fishing gear, there's a couple around and that would get you amongst it.
SquidMarks Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I think you might have better luck approaching a chain store rather than a sole owner business as you will find most often that owners tend to look after their own stores and find it hard to relinquish the responsibility to someone else (even family let alone someone who wants to get paid!). Having said that, nothing is impossible so unless you ask you will never know.
Oscarthebeagle Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I spent a year or so working at a tackle store at matraville after uni before having to get a full time job. Small store just went up and asked the owner, after a couple of shifts he gave me a set of keys and I ran the store a couple of days a week. Loved working there saw all the new toys coming in and every customer you could teach or learn something
batfishing Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 As a business owner Will. I take several very good points out of your post 1) you have written with clarity, which shows strong communication skills 2) you are motivated 3) you know the direction you want to take. Put together a brief letter of introduction, with what you are looking to do. Your skills and any experience, this can include your fishing experience as it is relevant to what you are applying for. This must not be anymore than one page. Then take yourself around every tackle store around you that is within travelling distance for you to work at. Dress neatly, present yourself and leave a copy of your introduction letter. Expect a number of No's.....importantly understand this is not a NO against you, it is not personally directed at you or your character etc. it is a NO, they do not have a position available. Realise it is a numbers game. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
boattart Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Ian Bat has covered pretty well everything. I may be a case of just knocking on doors in person and showing you're keen and hoping that someone is looking for staff. I wouldn't completely discount the larger chain stores either as with Xmas and New Year holidays coming up even a couple of weeks casual work will be a valuable addition to your resume.

I had a rough idea of a resumé but I think just a simple sheet like you mentioned above will work better. Will start writing it today. I think thats what I will probably look at doing first off, joining a chain store. And then, as a back up, I think I would still learn some useful fishing skills if I could get some casual work at the fish markets. Will let you all know how it goes. Thanks for the help, Will
batfishing Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 When you go around, great idea to have a parent or some one close with you. Not to walk in with you, but to be waiting outside for you........The numbers game of cold calling, is very tough, and it is really good if there is someone you can chat with, to raise your positiveness back up. After each meeting/interview, look at the positives, and take that into the next one Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Ric001 Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 An important point to remember (in line with Ian's point) just because it is no today it may not be a no in a week or 2. Another important point is think about what time of day or day of the week you try the cold call. Try not to apply on a weekend at lunch or near open and close times as they are usually the hardest in the day to get the owner or managers attention. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
mrsswordfisherman Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Ian, that is excellent information and thanks for sharing that with members.
brad_tate Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Ian, thank you very much for helping one of our upcoming Raiders. Great suggestions for a young job seeker from someone who who has been there himself and also been in a hiring role. will_I, if you want someone else to take a look at your resume, I am happy to do so, so PM me if you want. I'm going to try and go around with my mate this Friday as he is looking for a job as well (nothing to do with fishing). It will work well as he can go and hand in his resumé at a few places while I'll go and hand mine in at few. We will meet up after and have a chat about how it all went. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Very true. Another thing I was wondering is if they say 'thanks for the resumé, we will have a look at it and call you later', but then if it is 2-3 weeks later and I still haven't received a call would it be ok to call them and ask how my resumé is going or does that sound a bit like nagging? Thanks! Ian, thank you very much for helping one of our upcoming Raiders. Thanks!
BigRod Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Hey buddy i used to work in a tackle store owner operators do struggle alot your best bet is a bcf store there is alot of them around and they diversify to other product ranges they have a careers section on there website at the bottom of there home page Sent from my SM-G920I using Tapatalk
jeffb5.8 Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 (edited) If you are fit and happy to work hard for great pay, I can get you a start in Construction in Sydney. We are a specialist contractor to most of the known builders in Australia. PM if your interested, the money will be good enough as a new starter, to buy a boat and fishing gear, if you do some overtime. But you will start at the bottom, but this doesn't me you will be treat poorly. Edited December 15, 2015 by jeffb5.8
Guest Guest123456789 Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 (edited) Just go to the big stores, be friendly and say you want to do work experience (unpaid). Get friendly with the manager and staff and show you're a hard worker and they will put you on. Don't take no for an answer be persistent. Keep going back and eventually they will give in. This is how I got my job at the local pub when studying at uni. The first time I went there they said not hiring etc. Edited December 16, 2015 by Guest123456789

It's annoying because coles, woolworths, big retailers etc only do online applications and when you try and take a resumé to them they tell you they cant take it. Will keep an eye on the site though! Unfortunately though I'm still studying at school (final year) so I cant really do any part-time or full-time work. Mainly looking to do busy weekends as a casual at a shop of some sort (tackle store etc). But honestly, thank you so much for even offering that kind of job, that is extremely nice of you. Thanks to everybody for their helpful tips and offers, it really means a lot. - Will
big Neil Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 Will you sound like a very "together" young man. Good luck with your job searching mate. I'm sure you will get a job. I believe that ringing people back after a couple of weeks is a good idea. It will show you are keen. Neil.
will_l Posted December 19, 2015 Author Posted December 19, 2015 Well a big change of events happened. My friend got me a job at a Luxury retailer warehouse. Apparently it's a lot of fun! I'll see how it goes for the next few months and if it's not going that well I can easily start my search again. Thanks a lot for every bodies help! It's very much appreciated. Will
