kiwicraig Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Going stir crazy after a couple of days of rain. Still to windy to want to launch the boat but better than yesterday. There's only one thing for it - I hit the water in the kayak for some close to the ramp fishing. I spent a couple of hours drifting with two rods rigged with soft plastics to target flatties on the drift and one rigged for bait fishing for whiting. I've never actually targeted whiting specifically so it was a bit of an experiment. I struggle with the drifts in the wind, but then I located a sand bar that was holding some whiting. I pulled in 5 in fairly quick order - but they were all undersized and went back to swim again. I also pulled in one small squire snapper. The snapper and the 4 of the whiting were taken on prawn. One whiting took a 4in curly tail minnow in red and green. I also missed a hookup on what felt like a flatty and had several good hits that left me with abbreviated plastics - so I would say there were some chopper tailor around as well. Not the most productive day as I came home empty handed but still happy that I caught 5 of a species I was targeting for the first time and on 2lb leader it was good sport even on the small fish. And I've filed away that sandbank for future exploration in the boat. Better than sitting at home.
jed38 Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Hard work with todays wind but at least you're out having a go.
Holls Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Just about to hit the (windy) lake in the yak with plastics and a drift for whiting. Be happy to score what you did. Let you know!
Adsy91 Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 A few big jews have been hooked (not landed!) by a few boys on brissy waters the past few days...big dohnut for me today though that wind is a killer.
kiwicraig Posted January 8, 2016 Author Posted January 8, 2016 Yeah - not surprised. They are often taken after a big wet in Brissy Waters - just not by me
