Targeting Mullet from the Beach: Bats, Tackle, Technique?

Hi guys.

I would like to know what would be the best method to target sea mullet from the beach. I assume a small hook with a light line might work but casting it out far enough to might be a problem... further.. What would be best bait and overall technique?.

Hey Mate

I've only been successful in catching them a few times and it was by mistake.

Fishing in Newcastle I have caught strays (single sea mullet swimming outside the pack) whilst fishing for blackfish with green weed off the breakwall.

I'm not sure what they eat normally however I have also caught a couple on the 50/50 weed and dough mixture below a float. I've thrown it into the schools without a touch however it's the ones away from the pack that will feed.

As for fishing off the beach you would need to keep your bait near the surface and the sea mullet tend to sit just past the break so not sure how you would cast a float & the baits I've suggested that far....

The most likely target in terms of mullet for the beach would be the yellow eye mullet, we used to fish for them on south coast beaches and they are good fun and not bad eating when treated right. We used small pieces of beach worms and light gear and small hooks.

Years ago (20+) I used to fish for them in the channel around Sussex Inlet with varying success. Small hooks + balls of dough under a stick float.

I've found the trick with mullet anywhere is to get them feeding. Try burlying with bread and if they start agressively feeding you have a chance.

Never tried off the beach, but an old trick when needing to cast some distance is to cut a piece of broomstick size doowej about 4 inches long with a screw in eye on one end and painted white, tie on end of line and have a 2 - 3 short droppers with small hooks tied up close to dowel. Bait with fresh bread compressef into dough and also try small pieces of prawn or chicken as this stays on hook better.

This gives casting weight and mullet are attracted to float as they are feeding on white floating bread and you still have direct contact to hooks.

Good luck.
