Wide Gap/ Kahle Hooks - To strike or not to strike?

Hi All,

There were a lot of general discussions on the fishing forums about wide gap / kahle hooks which are sometimes referred as best of two worlds (standard shape hooks and circle hooks).

My questions are more specific:

- Should be the wide gap hooks set (like any standard shape hook) or not ( like circles) when fish takes the bait?

- When would you likely use wide gap hooks? e.g. for which fish species (besides flatties), in what rigs and for which bait?

Should I understand that no one is using wide gaps hooks anymore in NSW?

I use wide gap hooks for flathead fishing. I find standard circles can get their eyes.

I don't strike.

Thank you very much NaCIH2OK9. What size of the wide gap hook , do you think, would be most appropriate for 35-50cm flatheads?

I use 3/0 perhaps too big I'm always hoping for a bigger fish.

I like instinct hooks. I don't like mustards they are too fine gauge

I noticed that some wide gap hooks bend very easily unlike other hook shapes - does it impact hookup rate? Or Instinct wide gap hooks are rather stiff?

I've not tried many brands but instinct are the strongest I have.

Flathead don't pit up a big fight if you don't bully them. I haven't had issues. I would want to fight a king fish on one though

Thank you again NaCIH2OK9. I presume the wide gap hooks sit reliably when flatties shake their heads.
