REKLESS
Gidday all,I was umming and arring about putting up this post as I usually like to say that I have had at least a little success, this time all I got was a big el zippo. This trip started at Rose Bay at 0500 and I met up with Warren ,a hairy mate ,we put in without to much trouble and I pulled out the New toy .Its a Penn Fathomaster with the usual bells and whistles that I got 2nd Hand.We visited two usual kingy haunts and tried out some fresh Hawkesbury squid for only some bream bites.Went to the Baths at Neilsen park for squidly and live baits ,all we got were baby snapper.Right, then off to watsons bay where there was heaps of good harbour yakkas (perfect for JD) ,poked our noses out past the heads and punched our way to Rosa Gully .I towed a Squid at 35 ft depth about 15ft back until changing over to a yakka I kept him in a lttle closer at 10ft same depth ,This guy was bridled and sent out only to re emerge at Rosa gully looking a little frightened but other wise healthy ........damn it!. .My crew was feeling at the peak of health with the 15 knots of due easterley ,this combined with deep water bounce off the cliffs made for lumpy conditions .I asked if he was okay and he greenly said yeah he was fine, being only 2.5km from some good flatehead grounds I said we could always drift for some flatties .He was fine until I started telling him some storys about getting sea sick ,you know, the old pillie trick, fried eggs and getting pubes caught in the back of the throat etc etc . i will admit at this point that in regards to sea sickness I have no sympathy ,well at least till the bile comes up any way!. He eventually waved the white flag and we went into calm waters near quarantine trying to scare up a JD at a spot near quarantine ,all we got on the yakkas were sargent bakers ,all I got on the bait was cowanyoung and under size snapper!.Right then I said ,next move was to the Easterley wedding cake.We laid down a burley trail with th results that there was a mixed school of yakkas, trevally and slimeys .The slimeys are not the usual horses but very nice sized ones that were around the 20cm mark. They were not that thick but I was able to pick out an even dozen for the next trip out for snapper baits. We moved in to rose bay but eventually gave it away as a bad idea and headed off to go and drink beer and talk about fish. Cheers Simon I should mention that warren is the chef at Assiete restaurant,if you guys ever want to entertain the mrs ,this place would be a winner.Pm me if you want details. Guest bluecod
Simon - those downriggers are a good bit of gear - the charter in Nauru used one for far better results on both 'fin and wahoo than what surface lures were getting. One of the boats I fish from has recently been fitted with a unit and we may get to try it out one day soon, though instead of a ball it'll be running a "Z" foil. Guest Jocool
Good report Simon. Your a braver man than me getting out in the slop. Shame the Z-wings are so expensive George, US$50, they might be a bit more popular. It doesn't look like there is a lot to those Z wings! Couldn't one be bent up out of some alloy plate? Well if you knew someone with a template taken from an original and modified it slightly to avoid copyright regardless of the balance points, they wouldn't be too hard at all Bugger, I can't find the pattern - I'll have to get another copy Seriously though, they do not look that complex - a little understanding of aeronauticals and try out a few different balance points/weighting and you should be able to come up with your own design. REKLESS
Isnt the "Z" wing just a paravane made out of aluminium or something similar?,I fished in Fiji years ago (Between the two coupes) ,and while there I got to fish with a local, they were making paravanes out of wedges of wood, just like you would use as a doorstop.Anyway they were hell of an effective way to go ,they had a spoon about 3 foot behind this thing and they would be doing about 10 knots with this thing just humming along and the mackeral just could not resist.Very effective! Simon, I don't know how it got its name of "Z Wing" as in profile, its an inverted "U" shape, in plan, imagine its triangular with the outer corners cut off and the whole lot folded into a U shape. It rounded at the nose and heavily weight forward with a centre of gravity about 30% back from the nose and tow points marginally behind the CG. Release clips are simply rubber bands and we were setting the lures well back behind the wing. Apparently you can tweak them much the same way as lure so if running two you can have them both working away from each other.
Guest hottuna
good report how much did you get the down rigger for? dan
REKLESS
It was $300 ,it came with swivel base and not much else. I had to buy a 10 lb bomb (I did not have the time ,nor the lead to create my own "VB" bomb),that little puppy incidentaly has been fixed,it turns out my next door neighbour is into plastic injection moulding. He has asked me if I knew of some where that had bombs to sell as he needed one for a mould ,as he was about to go and buy a Downrigger!! .,and he had to make his own bombs for it. I got some stacker clips from Compleat angler and have some rubber bands for bigger things ready to go.
