you may find that under way tou will get a durty reading Ben, but it should be fine at rest. To clear it up underway, drop it about 40 mm. But this may throw up a tail!

:( Hi Chaps. Joe hit the nail on the head,it is a bit too dirty when under way on anything over about double walking speed, say 7klm.an hour.It is very good at rest or moving slowly. If i have it on at say 20 klm.an hour it goes blank and all the warnings go off for depth. Thanks for the input Joe, Ankles, Jimbo. Will try to get down the 40mm. will post any differance. :D  Ben.

The ideal would be to have it deeper than that...But then you run the risk of sending up a lot of spray! The spray when tend to hang around the back of the boat and tend to get ingested by the motor whis is also a bad thing! :nono:

The ultimate would be a thru-hull transducer! I looked at a new one that has been released for the Lowrance range of sounders, which is what I have, and it will cost me $1400 just to go to the Thru-Hull! :yikes: :yikes: :badmood:

Good point Jimbo! Sometimes it helps to see past the hype I guess. I honestly never thought of it being an issue at speed! :confusuion:

Shows how shallow I am at times!

:D Hi.Very good point Jimbo,I was probably going by the book which obviously tell little porky,s at times.Joe the one i have is a navman and they say in the book

not through the hull,i will stick with it as it is ,because it makes sense to do the fish finding at slower speeds. Thanks for the input chaps. Ben. :D

I would probably drop it down a few mm so it is sitting in the channel and is grabbing clean water, you will be surprised how much better the reading will be.

It looks to be a fair distance from your keel so your boat should be able to run aground without the transducer getting knocked. Even if it does get hit it should only flip up. If your mounting doesn't aloow the transducer to flip up then it would be a good idea to grab one that does. I have belted my tranducer hundreds of times and it still works fine (touch wood)

Ben,

Good post mate, I've about the same boat and put the transducer in almost the same location and, as you'd have it - exactly the same problems as yourself.

Let us know how you go with the transducer dropped down because I may have to drill more holes if I can't find a good sliding bracket to mount the transducer on.

A mate has his rigged to work at speed and its amazing the structure you find when running out to your favourite spot, such as wrecks in Pittwater and reef in unexpected locations. I reckon if the sounder works at cruising speed you're going to discover new ground to fish in.
