Spinning Lures in the Surf

Hey guys,

I'm considering getting into spinning metals for salmon, tailor, bonito and anything else that will take metals. Looking at starting off at the beach as it's a safer option than the rocks. Any tips or advice in terms of outfit and tackle? I'm completely clueless when it comes to metals.

My rod is a 12ft Mojiko Surf Cannon, and I have reels between 2000 and 4000 with 6lb-10lb J-braid x8 mainline (6lb on 2000, 8lb on 3000, 10lb on 4000) and a 6500 with 40lb J-braid.

Cheers,

Wellzy

Id look at a 9-11ft graphite rod with a 3000-4500 reel with 20lb braid

was fishing today at hill 60 and seen some guys spinning coconut rigs with 12ft fibreglass rods and oversized spinning reels

and boy did it look painful the way they were holding it between their legs and arms

so something light that can blast the lure miles out with ease and would be easier on your arms and back

The Mojiko is pretty light. I've been thinking for a while of changing the guides on it to be a bit lighter as well (the guides are fairly bulky and weigh a bit). Hoping to get a bit of time in tonight and see how I go. Not sure where I'm going yet though!

the last rod i got for light beach/rock spinning was a Synder (i think its wilson now) Magspin that I lengthened with a butt extension to 10ft long. I paired it with a 4000 size spin reel and 20lb braid- it flicks with very little effort a 40 gm lure into the next postcode. Its caught everything under the sun up to small spannies, longtails- its not a great lifting rod as the tip folds away but its my go to for a beach/rock spin session. It will lift a 3-4 kg fish without that much hassle but i do it carefully.

There was a bloke fishing next to me using one of these surf cannon rods today. Looks nice.

check the min and max lure rating. I find it when having too light of a lure, its too hard to flick it out

im not saying buy a crap load of lures in different sizes and colours. Just try one in the mid of the rods lure rating

HI Wellzy, I've got a surf cannon as well and they are a great start for what you are after. At some point you will need to replace the guides as they are cheap and start rusting pretty quickly but they used a damn good blank for those rods considering the price, got mine for $60 also\. I'd look to go a bigger reel than the 4000 as they cop a beating with that sort of fishing, the bigger reels are just more forgiving for dealing with repeat casting, sand, etc, something like an 8000 would work better. I've found 20lb braid is perfect, casts well and enough strength for casting heavier lures. 21g lures will be a little light given you really want to get some distance on the casts, I'd be going more around the 40-60g range at least. Buy some cheapies to start and see what you are comfortable casting. Lastly, Wanda can be a tough beach, you are going to get very sore and tired with all the casts between fish, good luck though.

Maybe pack the 4000 reel too that has 10lbs. You might need the extra casting distance. I'd put 20lbs leader on it and chuck a metal between 30 to 50 grams.

my secret weapon on the larger metals is an assist hook on a solid ring. The fish you're targeting usually hit the metal from the sideand the assist hook is in the middle of the lure resulting in much better hook ups. Trust me it works. The metal below is 50 grams and without the assist hook you lose lots of fish that hit the middle of the lure then spit it before they can be hooked. They don't often bite metal twice!

Ended up not going this afternoon. The store I went to in Penrith didn't have any Sienna 4000s, but I got a 6000 for the same price, spooled with 20lb and also picked up a couple of 42g metals. Forgot my leader line at home, so called it because it was 6pm by the time I got home.

On the plus side I've got the gear now!

I do a lot of salmon and tailor spinning from the beach and have slowly progressed over the years from 11 foot rods down to 9 footers. I find you lose very little casting distance, if any and you certainly don't tire as quickly casting the shorter rod.

A good rod I found is the 9 foot Shimano Coastal spin and I match this with a Stradic 5000 loaded with 15lb braid. Well balanced and perfect for casting 40-50g metals. My favourite beach outfit is my Daiwa Morethan Blue Backer rod and Morethan 3012H reel, very expensive but super light and an absolute dream to fish with.

If you're going for a 6000 size reel, I'd say you need at least a 10 foot rod to balance with it and if you're keen on keen on fishing the rocks, consider a spare spool and some 30lb braid.

Like flatheadluke said stinger hooks work great and will definitely improve your catch rate. I hang mine slightly different to his and you can see how in the last paragraph of this old report I did. I accidentally posted the wrong link but if you scroll to the top of the page, its there.

  • 4 weeks later...

I picked up one of the 9' Shimano Jungle Stix, they seem much better for metals than my Mojiko. Much more power and a longer but below the reel for casting. Going to have a crack tomorrow, see how it goes!

Down here on the south coast I use spin sticks from 6ft to 9ft. My favorate lure for casting and price has been the river2sea rock from 25g to 75g.

Most light reels in the 4000 size would be ideal, though I don't go above 10lb braid myself unless bait fishing.

Hey bro for spinning off the rocks or beach I  use 15 - 20LB.

I find 40gm lures are best off the rocks for me but I do use 25gms up to 40gms

My spin rod is an old Daiwa G70z Heavy Spin, 7 foot and reel is a Fin - Nor Rampage 8000 series 5 although these are at the cheaper end of the scale they do it for me.

My fav. lures are anything chrome / blue or green metal lures and Gold.

Halco or Gillies

My fav. line for spinning is Schneider mono.

Beach spinning although I have done very little of it is supposed to be good.

As far as lure selection goes, please dont forget soft vibes, you can do so mucn more with them in the surf, they fish the bottom half of the water colum very effectively.  Howard.

I can't say I've ever considered vibes. Might do some research!

As stated above these fish love the small lures, even bellow 25g are deadly on them hence the reason the reason for light line to cast them. As most people are aware the true breaking strain of most braids is often double what it says on the pack, so when I say Im using 10lb Im actually using 20lb or more in most braids, so those using 20lb are often over 40lb which are extremely hard to cast the preferred  small lures these fish take.

Try looking up braids on here http://www.paulusjustfishing.com/4linetesting.htm you may notice that many of the Daiwa braids are closer to the stated strengths than most other braids, these also tend to have thinner dia due to the more accurate spec.

The problem using to heavy braids with light rods and reels can be something has to give when a shark grabs your salmon or you simply hook a snag.

When casting into the wind you have no choice but have to use heavier lures but when the wind is offshore I cast high to use the wind to help carry light lures out further. Often the fish we get here are only half the distance or less that we can cast these lures. Look for deep gutters the shore side of sand backs, the more white suds being pushed over the bank the better, once you find the distance they are at, say 40m then theres no need to cast 80m.

We often get both tailor and salmon around 65-70cm down here, one salmon had a 28cm bream inside it.

As you can see above in the shot with my young lad holding a salmon the ones on the sand have a string through the gills and out of the mouth. The reason for the string is that we walk several km in search of the schools of fish, by clipping the string around my waist to a lure bum bag I can simply walk hands free still casting but dragging my fish as I walk. By walking on the waters edge the fish are much easier to drag when they get a little water under them.

The salmon are extremely underrated in my opinion and if bled by simply breaking the neck and breaking the skin between the belly and gills can make pretty good tucker. After filleting and skinning cut the fillet down the lateral line and remover the dark red meat ready to eat, fish above 2-3kg can often be strong and the meat a yellowy colour (use those for bait).

Wellzy,

All the gear mentioned above will catch you fish off the beach. Personally I use gear to suit conditions. If there's a bit of surf I use 40-60g lures on a longer, heavier rod (10'6/20lb)for cast distance, wave clearance, and fish fighting ability in a bit of surf. I find you get a better class of fish when the surf is up. Most of the time I use an 8ft rod with 10/15lb line and 25g lures. On flat days I'll use 6/7ft bass or plastics outfit and use 10g or smaller lures.

I fish to conditions but I live at the beach and can go for a look first. Probably pick my heavier 10'6 if I had to pick one.  Probably the most versatile. 20170319_111427_resized.jpgsome of the lures I use. The ALL work.
