Startsumthin
Hey guys does anyone happen to know if salmon will eat yellow tail? I can catch a tone of yellow tail at my local walf but note sure if they are any good for bait...
Mr Mullit
Caught a few salmon on small yakkas off the rocks. Pain in the ring when you're after bigger fish. Not the bait I'd target salmon with though.
Wellzy94
Hey mate, If you're after salmon, I'd go with pilchards. Whole on ganged hooks, or halved on singles. Cheers, Wellzy
krause
It's a bit of wffort compared to pillies, but theyll work just fine

JonD
They certainly do eat them, have caught plenty with big ones in the gut. We also find them around headlands feeding on large schools of yellow tail, pilchards school are rare in close and we've never seen salmon chassing the large schools out in deeper water ( we jump in on most big bait fish schools ). I would say yellow tail are the main diet of salmon down here on the south coast NSW, by using them you will find you can cast them further than most other baits because of their toughness. These are also a gun bait for Jews and gummy sharks etc. Jon
Mullatt
Like a lot of species, salmon can be caught on one bait today, and then something different another. I personally dont think yellowtail are the best bait for salmon. I prefer pillies or metal slices!
