Agent X
Saw that a southerly was blowing this morning and thot that it'll good to go out & chuck a few feathers. Plus I'd wanted to find time to do a field test of my modified shrimp flies (that i'm intending to use at Narrabeen this sunday)... swapped the bead-chains for burnt mono. Reached the spot at abt 8am... tied on the fly and hauled away... on the 4th strip, the line tightened...fast... and on the 1st cast! How good was that.... the fight was nice... thought it was a trev, but apparantly this bream didnt read "How Breams Fight 101"... thoh it came to only 29cm, it fought way better than its bigger cousins further up river... So the fly passed the test. But unfortunately, it was swimming upside down.... more work needed... I walked further up in search of flatties but couldnt find any.... after an hour or so, I returned to the faithful spot... about 10mins (and 2 misses) later, the pinky was taken... too bad it fell short by 8cm... otherwise, i'd be having snapper fillets for dinner tonight X-out Edited October 27, 2005 by Agent X
kevvie
gr8 report mate and a good catch too. Isn't it satifying when your creation works to catch fish. It looks the goods from the pictures... just like a small prawn. Why do ya reckon it swims upside down?
Agent X
Glad u enjoyed e report. It was actually supposed to ride hook-up as it sinks and while retrieving... but the weight was not distributed properly for that to happen and the hook point was on the bottom instead of facing up, I've just glued on a small piece of lead at the bottom....and hopefully they'll swim upright now. It's really nice to have something you 'made' do what it's supposed to. Edited October 27, 2005 by Agent X
Guest bluecod
Good stuff Agent-X. A very satisfying way to start the day. Bring that fly along on Sunday so we can have a look at it. Not that any of us would copy a fly that works

pogo
G'day Agent X You might want to try tying the fly as a bendback You bend the shank of the hook about 15- 20 degrees and it makes them ride point up If you get into a tackle shop ask to see a bendback fly and youll see how it works or someone might have some on Sunday, ( I dont know if I have any left in my flybox} Aha found a Pic You might have to experiment with where you put the bend, with bulkier flies it needsto be further down Edited October 28, 2005 by pogo
Guest madsmc
You've done it again X. Nice set of fish there. The fly looks good as well, although from my (limited) experience I think that shrimp imitations are supposed to ride hook down? I could be wrong. Looking forward to having a closer look at them on Sunday at the Social. Wouldn't mind starting to tie my own flies and am looking forward to getting some idea and tips. Agent X
Hi there Pogo, Thanks very much for your inputs mate! I've always been a fan of bendbacks and sought to tie my flies in this configuration whenever I can. That way, I can use bead-chains instead of lead eyes, making them easier to cast... I've attached an image of my "baby" The hook's been bent but somehow the fly just doesnt swim right... I didnt want to bend it too much coz I wanted the shape to resemble that of a shrimp as well... so I did the next best thing, glued on a small piece of lead to just put enough weight on the bottom so the hook rides upwards... but for future flies, I'll wind some lead wire inside for the same effect... Took the modified fly out for another short test this morning... and the pinkies gave their stamp of approval. The takes were very aggressive despite their small size... and on a particular cast, the fly was already taken before I even had time to strip the line... it really worked well... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shane: It's true that the early shrimp patterns were hook-down configurations but new flies get 'created' so quickly now that I gave up keeping track... I'm just trying to see if my shrimp pattern was feasible... no complaints so far ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin + Clutch: Thanks guys!
