Guest Jocool
I think I should start writing BOATING reports! Hit the Harbour this morning with Fish4fun (Pat) at about 5 AM. The Harbour was like a lake as we motored over to Balmoral for my morning ritual of getting skunked on squid! Managed to get a few yakkas after the obligutory hord of Mado's, and then had a huge run! I thought I may have picked up a Trevor, but it was a Pike that went about 40 cm's! Kept him for bait as well. Now as we were catching bait, we were treated to a little show by an amorous couple on the island in front of Balmoral! Over to the Marker at Quarantine to try and convert the livies into something edible. It started of as a superb morning, but as we moved toward North Head there was a big jump in swell size, to about 2 metres plus, and the wind had also picked up. I figured, with all the boats at Quarantine I wasn't going to get a decent drift so I anchored up-current of the marker with the intention of letting our baits down under the bouy. You wouldn't think it would happen, but one fine gentleman came and anchored right next to me...and I mean right NEXT to me! So I upped anchor and got out of their. Headed beyond the heads in search of greener pastures. I found it real strange that a lot of boats were actually anchored down-current of the marker bouy. Is there method in their madness, or is it just lack of knowledge??? I have always tried to get my baits close to the mooring....not away from it! Now as we exited the Harbour and went North toward Manly, a call came through from Frank (Wetpatch) on the radio telling me he was onto some Horaces! Got over there to find him drifting off Manly with a few keeper Flatties. Joined him for a couple of drifts with not much happening other than some Ooglies such as SB's flower pots and Wrasse. Gee it really wasn't my day! headed back in-shore and thought we may try and pick up a flatty or two of the Rose Bay flats, but the wind and current put paid to that idea! And the little skiffs were buzzing around like flies with all the kids yelling obsenities at each other. All in all a rather un-succesful day on the fishing front, but as far as boating goes...It was a top day! Great to see fellow Raiders out there too! How did you guys all go? Bashir
tough luck Joe, I spent the morning casting metal off the rocks. Probably spent more time dodging the sets than actually fishing, a bit fat zero here. Was back at home by 10.30am so at least the day wasn't wasted. Guest bluecod
Joe, ever think about why it is , that two people using the same technique, rigs, bait etc, can fish out of the same boat and one of them cleans up big time and the other goes away shaking his head? Not trying to say that as a fisherman you stink, but " Repeated experiments have shown that fish react negatively to certain smells that spell danger such as those given off the human hand. Humans have a substance called L-serine which is an amino acid. When they touch a bait, a lure, line, and so forth, this substance transfers and the fish can smell it." Apparently some people generate more of this L-serine stuff than others and is one way of explaining why it is that some people can have a problem catching a fish at times. Then again they might just be fishing in the wrong spots Worth a thought!

Answering the above - although i will anchor the boat the same as you did, these guys could have made good all the berley you guys on the upsteam side where offering. Sure the kings should in theary swim up the berly trail for more food, that is if your the only boat there, however when theres alot of boat traffic i reakon it puts them off. OR, they may have just watched one of no no nos dvds in which he mentions that Kings LIKE the down current, more shadowed side of the structure....makes alot of sense. Weather im casting a sluggo or drifting a livie past a bit of structure (be it a bouy or underwater pinnical) i always do so on the down current side. Structure gives the preditors cover from the water movement , with little effort required to feed. darting out from behind it when something tasty passes close. Guest bluecod
I'd be a bit more blunt than that Joe Just watching and talking to successful fisherpeople over the years - you'd be surprised by how many of them reckon its got to do with scent - don't smoke - always caught more than my brother etc etc. I won't go into detail but one elderly lady I spoke to let me into her trade secret - I'll tell you tomorrow! Narralakes
Hard day at the office Joe, dont worry, once you start fly fishing, you'll catch more fish and its heaps of fun as well. What George was saying about the scent people give off scents on baits, lures, flies etc, its true. When I 1st started flyfishing the guys were telling me to never wipe sunscreen with your hands, use your forearms, I now use a tube that allows you to rub it on from the tube, yeah baby! Also, smoking, that is a no no for fly fishermen, gets on the feathers or what ever your fly is made of and stays there, the trout in particular have very sensitive smell, saltys as well. If you do smoke or give off more scent, then apply a fish attracting scent to the fly or lure, or a drop of tuna oil, that should sort it out. See you all tomorrow. Guest fishrunner
Bad luck Joe, If it makes you feel any better myself,Jewel and Brettoes got our squid and then proceeded to round to bluefish where we saw yourself returning, little bit rough out there so decided downrigging in the harbour round various markers was more our style. Just a pity the kings didn't agree. Oh well what can you do,? Decided to call it a day after a quick lil go round middle harbour. All in all company was great and a good day was still had reguardless. Squid taste good anyway, Maybe next weekend will work for us Joe , good to see ya out there cheers
