arthur06
As mentioned on a previous forum, I'm heading down to narrabeen lagoon for fleathead. I have lures to flick (Sp's and Hb's) but I also wanted to use bait. I have fresh dead yakkas, frozen pilchards and of course, live poddies. Which should I use? Obviously the poddies but should I use yakkas or pillies for cut/whole bait? And how should I rig what I use? I have three rods, one for lures and two for bait to soak. Thanks guys. ARC H
i would use a yakka cutlet on 2 hook rig one hook running this will keep away annoying pickers LMK how you go cheers

GoingFishing
Flathead will just about anything on a hook. I would focus on your rig/technique more than bait selection. If ur using soft plastics ur likely to get better results in the winter flatties by tempting them with a moving soft plastic rather than a stationary bait sitting on the bottom

To be completely honest with you, one of the most gun baits to this day would have to be the humble nipper/yabbie. You can pump them everywhere around the lagoon and they attract some solid fish (Bream, flatties and big whiting). In your current situation, I would most definitely go for the live poddies as nothing beats live bait as they say. Cheers, KingieRun

Koalaboi
If using live poddies, put them under a float with the bait a bit off from the bottom and then allow the bait to drift with the ebbing tide through the channels. KB
PelagicQuest
Like kingierun said cant beat a nipper or a worm in the estuary, if poddies are what you got go with them. The best bait is alive bait. Edited June 28, 2017 by PelagicQuest

campr
I specialise in catching (and releasing) big flathead in ANSA comps and there is no beating live baitfish. I prefer yellowtail but always have poddy mulet as a backup but any small live fish is better than dead bait even trumpeters, maidows and sweep etc. If you want big flaties no bait is too big. Only 9 days ago I put out a legal sized mullet that would weighed about 700gm as a jew bait only to be taken by a 78cm flathead. I use a size 1, 1/0 or 2/0 wide mouth hook depending on size of bait and hook bait through mouth and up through top just back from lips. I have caught flatties up to 5.6kg on size 1 hooks. Hope this helps.
