Mike89
Hi guys! Hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on protecting the butt and grips of my new baby against chips/scrapes on the cork. I remember someone once mentioning a kind of wax that you could coat the cork in to protect it from damage. Does anyone know about this? Thanks guys! savit
I saw plenty of old forum posts on rod cork waxing or similar (water-proofing) protection in the past. Just try to google it if no responses.
xerotao
I was looking into this a while back to protect my more expensive rods with cork grips. And i think U40 cork seal is what you are after. I havnt tried the product as i ended up just replacing the seats and grips to my own personal taste. and also iv tried dying cork black did not turn out so well at all! Oldfella
Hi Mike; First thing to do is give the grips a wipe over using fine steel wool and metho to clean them. I then use a boot waterproofing paste called "Boot Goo'. It is basically beeswax. Put the rods out in the sun to warm the cork and apply a light coat, Let this soak in and apply another couple of coats. Leave in the sun between coats so it will soak in. If you want to risk a trip to the dog house use the Bosses hairdryer! Wipe any surplus off with a paper towel and that is it. This will last a couple of seasons, Just wipe them over with a damp cloth after using them. Has worked a treat for me for years. Cheers. Roger.
