Hooked-Up
Hey all, was chasing blackfish for the first time yesterday, (great fun) got 4 fish on the stringy weed which i thought was pretty good for first time chasing them. biggest fish was 35cm but got demolished by a much stronger fish that ended up burying me in weedbeds and couldnt get him out on 4lb tippet lol. anyway whilst sitting in the boat alot of brown stringy slimy weed kept floating past, i grabbed some to test out but couldnt pull myself away from the green weed lol. wondering if its a good bait for the blackfish as is much easier to find than greenweed for me lol. thanks and look forward to your repies. love the centrepin reels too! Oldfella
Hi mate; There are three things that could have done you. One is an extra large luderick or it could have been a black trevally or a surgeon fish. Watch yourself handling both of these. The Black trevally dorsal spines are slightly venomous. Another name for these is " Happy Moments"' If you get spiked I can assure you will be VERY unhappy! The Surgeon Fish is well named. They have razor sharp gill covers so watch this. As regards to the brown slimy weed. No good for anything. Basically just shows the water is still cold. Personally I think the brown slime puts the fish off. As the water warms up or you have a good fall of rain in the estuaries the slime disappears. That is when the fish come out of their winter mode. Hope this helps. Cheers. Oldfella. Ryder
Great result for a first effort. I've caught many fish with their guts full of brown weed, no doubt they do eat it but I reckon they prefer the green when it's on offer. The best way is to give it a go, it could work out to your advantage. The fish that drilled you I agree could have been a surgeon, black trevally usually strip the bait with a down. We get done by surgeons up as far as gladeville. Up your leader to 6 lb and hang on.
