frenzyfol
Hey guys, After snapping a 12foot 12-20kg line class graphite beach/rock rod on a 56cm drummer (I landed him ). I'm now less enamoured with carbonfibre rods than I was when I first felt how light it was. It was a bad landing and I may of "bruised" the rod against a rock previously. Regardless, I'm almost certain that fibreglass would of withstood the poor form. I'm wondering if there's a type of rod that combines the advantages of both the lighter carbon fibre and strength/resistance of fibreglass. If the base of a rod was made of predominantly carbon fibre and the tip fibreglass you would get a nice trade off between weight and resilience. Do such rods exist? Or is there some other tech that would suite these conditions.
xerotao
There are such rods that are graphite with fibreglass insert tips. You will mostly find them under the graphite composite name. Like the shimano aerowave graphite composite. There was also an older penn rod with a graphite composite but i cant remember the name
kingfishbig
The Shakespeare Ugly stick has been around since the 1970's and are a very tough rod. The have a fiberglass tip and graphite/ mix lower down. Others have copied the idea eg Silstar.

PaddyT
If you are fishing for pigs a lot then stay away from graphite , graphite is much tougher these days but doesnt like impacts on the wall of the blank which unfortunatley does happen a bit when rockhopping. A reaaly tough good light weight rod is the old FSU 4120 .
rickmarlin62
im not sure if still available but the fsu5120 mag were pretty good...the 4120 was a little bit light on .ive broken five or six just casting big metals off the stones.usually between 18/24 inches from tip..never broken 5120...rick
PaddyT
Yeah agree but wasnt the 4120 mag an early graphite composite- my FSU 4120 is still alive and kicking 26 years later , I gave it to my brother who is a very occasional fisher a few years ago after I flogged it for nearly 20 years
