DaveTheBoy
Hi there Raiders. I'll shortly be taking a bit of a 4WD trip with the Mrs around Southwest WA, and wanted to get any tips on likely spots to wet a line. This won't be an all out "fishing holiday" - but I should get a line in most days. Places we'll be stopping for a night or two: Busselton, Margaret River, Pemberton, Albany, Esperance. Also if you have any hot tips on places to camp that would be much appreciated! Dave
Brew
Hi mate, Cape Le Grand is nice for camping and fishing. Also ask the ranger for directions to Margaret Cove (Secret spot). Very remote which is great if you want some isolation. Fitzgerald NP had fish and abolone. Mussels in front of Rivermouth Caravan Park in Denmark. Pemberton has the Gloucester tree to climb. Busselton has the pier which you can go under the water to view the fish. If caves are of interest there are a few south of Margaret River. I think Lake Cave was our favourite. North of Busselton is a campground that is dusty at Herron Point, Harvey Inlet that you can get prawns and crabs. This was all back in 2004 so much could have changed. Enjoy. Toilor
Mount Camel Beach for free camping and fishing. If you get the chance check out Bremer Bay, stay as long as you can. Beach, rock and jetty fishing brilliant in a small town well off the beaten track. I found the fishing tougher once I got further west from Bremer Bay until Shark Bay where you can catch fish with bare hooks.

I think we're starting around Esperance/Cape Le Grand and making our way back around the coast to Perth. Appreciate the tips!
JonD
Just be aware WA has a very high crime rate, many cars get broken into while parked behind the sand dunes as people fish ( lived in Fremantle and was part of the marine rescue, we even had vital equipment stolen from the rescue boat locked in secure parking). If you see broken windscreen glass in parking areas move on. The fishing for me really kicked in from Kalbarri up, with no end of big fish to target from the shore or rocks. Even Monkey Mia on the sand had Jews and other quality fish through the day, nighttime was shark crazy. My advice would be to grab a copy of the fishfinder magazine, this has great info on most of Australia's best fishing spots http://www.fishfinderbooks.com/ Another thing is carry plenty of spare line especially the further north you go, I even managed to get spooled on 24 kg using a tiagra 50w. A regular spot for me and the wife was just before Kalbarri at a place called red bluff ( there are a few red bluffs), infact we almost bought the campsite on the beach there when we moved out of Sydney. On the rocks I could catch big tailor without hooks simply by working poppers fast back to the rocks where the fish would jump from the water chassing the lure beaching themselves. Tailor can reach 10kg around those parts, also longtail tuna come close to the rocks there. Most people have heard of places like steep point but we found even places you've never heard of fished well.

You're almost wanting me to redirect our tip up north! Though I think the Mrs is quite keen on Esperance. Thanks for the tips & also about the safety side of things - I'll keep a close eye out for any smashed glass/signs of trouble as we go around.
