Ken A
Twenty one special kids and their families will come together this weekend for a fishing clinic and annual get together at the Bushlands on the Murray Tourist Park. The weekend is all about fun, fishing and support and gives the kids, who range in age from two to 14 years, and their families, a chance to relax and socialise with other people who are living with life threatening illness. Kevin McKinnon from the Tocumwal Angling Club said this is the fourth year that they have organised the event which includes a fishing clinic run by the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and sponsored through the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts. “We arrange accommodation, transport and catering for the weekend. It’s our way of giving something back to the community and allowing these families to have some fun and maybe catch a fish or two. “Participants will learn about bag and size limits, aquatic habitats, threatened species and ethical fishing practices. They will also practice knot tying, casting and other practical fishing skills,” Mr McKinnon said. The new mobile Freshwater Advisory Trailer ‘Perchy’ will also be on show this weekend. The recently constructed trailer is purpose build to be a self-contained showpiece; it is fully equipped with television, DVD and VCR player and is stocked with promotional material relating to recreational fishing in NSW. The trailer has also been funded through the Recreational Fishing Trust. “This weekend has also been made possible by the cooperation of Country Hope, which is a non-profit organisation that offers support and assistance to local kids with life threatening illnesses and their families,” Mr McKinnon said.
