Reel maintenance and problems

So a few months back I bought the daiwa bg8000 reel, affordable and relatively strong, I mostly use it from the rocks sliding livies so it gets the odd wash or spray of salt water. I rinse it well in fresh water after every use and give a generous application of wd40 to all moving parts of reel and wipe down. But it had stiffened up and just hasn't felt as smooth as it should. Why could this be and what can I do before situation deteriorates?

first of all NEVER put WD40 on a fishing reel, it's a solvant that basically strips away the oil that lubricates the reel, hence the reel being stiff and rough

wash your reel with a sray bottle and use a light mist of freshwater over the entire reel rather than hose it as a solid stream of water will just force salt and sand in deeper

you can either get it serviced by a pro most tacle shops either service reels or no someone that does or you can strip and oil it yourself just use youtube thats how I learned but get proper reel oil and use it sparingly

unfortunetly the reel may be cactus and you could be up for a new one ust depends if the bearings have worn because of the wd40 stripping the oil

WD40 will break down the factory installed lubricants inside your reel, line roller bearing etc. It is a lubricant in itself but nowhere near as good as factory spec grease/oil.

As well as being a lubricant it is a solvent which is why it eats grease/oil.

You have effectively removed all factory grease/oil from your reel. Either re-install yourself or take to a decent shop to do it.

I have recently learned about the importance of reel service, and based off my research this is what I can tell you. Pull your reel entirely apart, and clean everything first with a cloth to get rid of grease and oils. Soak your bearings and any moving metal parts in pure acetone to give them a good deep clean, you'll have to do some research on what can and can't go in it. Then you'll need some reel grease for the gears, drag grease for the drag bearings and reel oil for the bearings. What you get is up to personal preference, but I am using cal's grease for the gears and drag, and inox mx3 oil for the bearings, but that might be a bit light for your reel. Never ever ever ever use WD-40 on your reel again, and stick to the oils and greases specially designed for it. I learned my lesson using skate oil on the bearings and gears of one of my reels, and nearly ruining it permanently.

That's true about some wd40 but there are many different wd40 spray lubricants and I believe some can be used on reels without any problems. After looking into high end triathlon race bike bearings and gears I found there are wd40 lubricants that are safe to use on delicate bearings and gears http://www.wd40.com.au/products/wd-40-specialist/

In the Shimano instructions for my Shimano overheads (TLD Charter Soecial, Tyrnos 20 II, Tyrnos 30 II) it says if you clean with water, to tighten up the drag and use a light mist spray only, then to wipe the reel over with a rag and light spray of RP7, WD40 or similar. After that, you need to slacken off the drag for storage. But, yes, generally not a good idea to spray inside the reel with WD40 etc.

Thank JonD. I did not know about such variety of WD40 products. Could not find the most important one though in the weblink - WD40 The Fish Attractant ?.

There are a variety of products under the WD-40 brand name, but only one of them is the water dispersant known as WD-40. I use silicon spray on my reels, at least the ones susceptible to corrosion, ie anodised aluminium Tiagras, Toriums, ABU ambassadeurs. As long as your are a bit careful it should not get inside the reel and cause the problems discussed.

Personally I wouldn't use acetone as a solvent as it will soften and lift paint, attack rubber gloves (and not good to get on your skin), evaporate quickly and is quite expensive too. White spirits is a good solvent and does not leave an oily residue so you can use it on drag washers too.
