The two biggest things to learn when chasing flathead;

1. Always move, flathead don't generally cruise around and look for food. They sit and ambush in opportunistic locations so you have to "scan" the area by wide casting patterns

2. Make sure the lure you are using is swimming right and has the right action and is not running foaled or looks unnatural in the water.

Good advice in both responses Kingyjohn. I would add that soft plastics work very well providing they are in contact with the bottom and are retrieved to imitate a sick or wounded baitfish. Obviously cover the area thoroughly before moving on. Good luck bn

Maybe not a swimbait. im guessing some sort of hardbody.

Swimbaits and glidebaits are usually really big and heavy in size.

edit: sorry guys after a quick google. there seems to be smaller swimbaits.

There has been quite a few articles in fishing mags about the trend tof using large eal like softies up to 10 inches long in shallow water to target xlarge flatties.  They are rigged with a large worm hook up front with a stinger further back on a trace.  I specialise in chasing big flathead in ANSA comps mostly using live bait and plan to give this a try.  Ron
