charlief95
Hi guys, Will be staying at right on the sand at Callala Bay over the next week, Dad and I both have pedal kayaks and will be looking to target mainly flathead. Looking for advice firstly on where to collect bait (squid, nippers and prawns) and also where we should spend most of our time fishing. We will definitely fish Currumbene Creek but were also thinking of the Bay itself, the Basin, Woolumboola Lake and Crookhaven river, are any of those stand outs? I haven't found much info on Callala Bay itself, does it fish well? Any advice/locations welcome! Cheers
Green Hornet
Callala Bay is a great place for a few squid over the weed beds and over inside the reef. You'll get flathead, bream and whiting along the beach but expect them to be pretty spread out. If you're going for a pedal, chuck a lure out and have a troll for a flathead although the floating ribbon weed can be a nuisance at times. Expect the current to run hard in Currambene Creek. It makes it difficult to fish from a kayak, but they're great for accessing a nice sand flat away from the crowds to gather nippers and fish from. Just make sure you're aware of the no fish, sanctuary zones. Crookhaven River is a great place to try, especially around Orient Point where there's always somewhere protected from the wind. Again, there's plenty of flats to pump nippers of trap poddy mullet. Lake Wollumboola can be a difficult place to fish, but it does hold a healthy population of big bream. Local knowledge and ultra light outfits go a long way when fishing the lake. Don't forget the insect repellent when fishing the creek or river. The sand flies there will take chunks out of you!! masterfisho7
For the flathead from a kayak I would use lures hard body and soft plastic
charlief95
Thanks Greenhornet, heaps of good info there. What makes Lake Wollumboola hard to fish? The reef from Callala Bay, is it easily accessible and worth fishing? I saw somewhere that it was about a 100m pedal from jetty, is that right? Green Hornet
The bottom of Wollumboola is blanketed in weed making it difficult to fish baits with any type of sinker and there's very little in the way of structure, so the fish can be anywhere. The reef at Callala is just around the corner of the south point beside the ramp. Have a look on google earth and you can't miss it. It will also give you a nice calm spot to fish when the southerly blows.
Kevwing
I was just seeing if any follow up or recently any reports on bonnies and kings in Jervis Bay
