Outfished by a 5 year old

Made a plan with the boy on Saturday afternoon to go fishing this morning early. We had a birthday party at 11am so I went in at 5:15am this morning to ask if he still wanted to go. Despite still being mostly asleep, he just hugged me with his eyes closed and whispered ‘yep’.

We were in the water at 5:45am from Koolewong Ramp. The conditions were never going to be ideal but the wind was stronger than I hoped for so I had to abort the original plan to fish up the system in Gosford. We tried Saratoga first and after a bit of spray he was now fully awake. Good flow but wind made it too hard so we tried paddy’s channel. No action there so we moved into Woy Woy channel.

It was still a bit blowy but I could navigate an ok line here. I was fishing bait and the boy was fishing soft plastics. I was impressed how well he was casting, jigging and retrieving.

He hooked up and after a good fight I netted his fish. He was stoked

We continued on a he hooked up again. This was a larger fish and he could barely wind the reel or lift the rod tip, but after the fish tired and finished its runs I netted his 50cm croc.

We tried another drift but no luck. Headed in at 10am after a great morning session.

Nice fish for the young bloke to catch, and will make some good eating.
